The book comes as a result of the AARP Diet study, which is the largest study of American diet and lifestyle habits. Dr. Whyte is the chief medical expert for the Discovery Channel. The AARP Diet Plan features an eating plan that focuses on combining elements of the Mediterranean Diet and the standard American Diet. The book features a month long meal plan to take the guesswork out of the diet and make it easier to follow. The diet includes up to date information about nutrient intake, and addresses myths about the use of artificial sweeteners and how eating foods high in good fat can make you fat. In the book he discusses diet busters, such as eating red meat four or more times a week, avoiding fruit, sleeping less than six hours a night, eating too fast, and skipping breakfast. He also shares diet boosters, such as meditating a few minutes a day, sharing a dessert and drinking two cups of coffee a day. He also says that you can eat up to four eggs a week without seeing an increase in your cholesterol levels. Though he recommends avoiding restaurants for the first two weeks, the book includes advice about how to handle them later in the plan. He recommends exercising three times a week, for at least 30 minutes each time. This approach, though not unique is practical to achieving weight loss goals. At the end of the month, you may need to create new recipes and recycle ones in the book to create a new version of the plan to keep your weight loss going unitl you reach your goal.
