Alpha Lipoic Acid is a common ingredient in weight loss and bodybuilding supplements. The antioxidant is responsible for helping cells to transform glucose into useable cell energy. Antioxidants also play an important role in overall body health and waste removal from cells, but is there a connection between weight loss and this antioxidant?

List of Ingredients

Alpha Lipoic Acid – antioxidant.

Product Features

When alpha lipoic acid converts sugar to energy, waste products are created. These waste products are called free radicals. Free radicals can take over healthy cells and reproduce – killing cells along the way. Antioxidants trap these free radicals preventing them from reproducing. The free radicals die off and new, healthy cells reproduce. When antioxidants work against free radicals it reduces the amount of antioxidants in the body. There is some evidence that alpha lipoic acid can help these other antioxidants to reproduce and thus maintain healthy levels in the body. Most antioxidants are only soluble in either vitamin E or vitamin C, but alpha lipoic acid is soluble in both, which makes this antioxidant very unique.

Alpha lipoic acid may be beneficial as a treatment for diabetes, including, nerve damage and numbness associated with the disease. The antioxidant has also been used to help treat liver disease, but there is no evidence it works to improve liver health or prevent advancement of the disease.

In animal studies, alpha lipoic acid passes through the brain barrier possibly protecting the brain from damage. Animals showed survived brain damage four times as often when treated with the antioxidant.

The body makes its own alpha lipoic acid, but food sources include yeast and red meat. Supplementation is available, but not necessary for good health. There is no proof that more alpha lipoic acid will help the body function better.

In terms of weight loss, there is no evidence that the antioxidant will boost metabolism, suppress hunger or increase fat burn.

Alpha Lipoic Acid sells for $7 to $8 per bottle.

  • The body makes alpha lipoic acid so supplementation may not improve benefits.
  • Not associated with weight loss or fat loss.

Dieters have no reason to suspect alpha lipoic acid is the answer to their weight loss dreams. The antioxidant works wonders in the body, but as long as the body is healthy, alpha lipoic acid is produced internally. We could find no evidence that taking supplements will improve the antioxidant benefits or overall health benefits associated with alpha lipoic acid.
