The Anticancer Diet comes from a book called, Anticancer: A New Way of Life was written by David Servan-Schreiber Ph.D. He’s a neuroscientist who had to go through a series of chemo treatments and surgery to battle brain cancer. At the end of the ordeal, when he asked his oncologist if he could do anything in terms of diet and lifestyle to help prevent a relapse, he did his own research, because his doctor told him, “no.” His research indicated several things about the food you eat and how you live can make you more susceptible to cancer, so he wrote a book detailing the best way you can fight cancer on your own. He has now been free of cancer for seven years.

Diet is only one of the things you need to look at and change if you want to work against cancer. The book does provide some recommendation on how you can alter your diet, but does not provide sample meal plans. If you want to eat to avoid cancer, your diet should include mostly vegetable and healthy oils, with lots of spices and herbs for flavor and health benefit. Stop focusing on animal products as the main portion of a meal, and think of them more like optional condiments. Reducing your risk of cancer lies mostly in reducing the amount of white flour and sugar. Stick to desserts such as dark berries, and a 70% or higher cacao dark chocolate. Increase your intake of fish so you get plenty of Omega-3 fatty acids.

Foods you should eat or drink include: organic meats, eggs with omega-3, lentils, whole grains, dark berries, onions, garlic, mint, green tea, broccoli, beets, sweet potatoes, bok choy, tofu, and cranberries.

Exercise at least 30 minutes a day, six days a week to greatly reduce your risk of cancer. Start taking yoga classes or meditate as a part of this to help reduce your risk even further.

The Anticancer: A New Way of Life book has good information based on science, but it lacks a lot of information about how to put the science to practical use. It could be greatly improved by including sample meal plans and recipes to help the reader get started. This diet will likely induce weight loss because it focuses on healthier choices, but it is not explicitly designed for weight loss.
