Apple Cider Vinegar Diet Review

Editor's Review: 3.0 / 5.0

What You Should Know

The Apple Cider Vinegar Diet has been around in one form or another for decades but was brought to popular attention by herbologist Earl Mindell’s 1998 book “The Amazing Apple Cider Vinegar Diet.” The premise of the Apple Cider Vinegar Diet is that taking small amounts of apple cider vinegar daily suppresses appetite and assists in weight loss. Apple Cider Vinegar is also said to reduce glucose levels, treat acid reflux disease and cure acne, among other things.

There have been clinical studies, on both rats and humans, suggest apple cider vinegar does make one feel fuller, but more research is needed. Various other claims of benefits are not supported by research but there is some support for apple cider vinegar’s role in lowering glucose and cholesterol levels.

Product Features

Because of the lack of study of the Apple Cider Vinegar Diet, there is no specific recommended dosage, but most proponents suggest taking 2-3 teaspoonfuls half an hour before a meal. Apple cider vinegar should always be diluted as vinegar is an acid and, if taken undiluted, can cause damage to the esophagus and stomach. The vinegar can be diluted in 8 ounces of cold or warm water.  Apple cider vinegar can also be mixed with olive oil and used as salad dressing. Some proponents of the Apple Cider Vinegar Diet state that only natural organic vinegar that has a “mother” can provide the desired benefits. The vinegar “mother” is a clump of live and actively fermenting cells that are responsible for producing the vinegar in the first place.

Users of the Apple Cider Vinegar Diet generally support the effectiveness of the diet. The most common complaints appear to be about the taste of the cider vinegar although most who have been on the diet for a few weeks say that one gets used to the taste quickly.

Advantages

  • Cider vinegar is inexpensive and nothing else is needed to be on the diet.
  • Cider vinegar is a source of various B vitamins and amino acids that may provide benefits for overall health.
  • There have been studies supporting apple cider vinegar’s ability to suppress appetite.

Disadvantages

  • Apple cider vinegar can cause damage to the esophagus and stomach if taken undiluted over a long period of time.
  • There is no definitive clinical study proving that apple cider vinegar helps users lose weight.
  • No standard dosage exists
  • Individual results may vary. (See reader comments.)

Conclusion

The Apple Cider Vinegar Diet may appeal to many because of its simplicity, inexpensiveness and potential effectiveness as a “natural” cure. Although it has been around for decades, the Apple Cider Vinegar Diet is regaining popularity as the price of other diet aids rises. Despite some positive reviews from people who’ve had success using cider vinegar, there simply is not enough scientific information to support its effectiveness. Taking a few teaspoonfuls of apple cider vinegar a day (properly diluted) is unlikely to cause negative reactions in otherwise healthy individuals, so there is little risk in trying the diet. There are, though, many diet aids on the market today that contain clinically-proven, effective ingredients that come with manufacturer’s money-back guarantees. Consumers may wish to research these products before settling on the Apple Cider Vinegar Diet.

You can expect to lose 3/4 lbs a week with this diet as long as you don;t eat fast food or greasy fried food. you can treat yourself nearly every night to a brownie, a few cookies, a small piece of cake..do a short brisk walk if possible. Vinegar is very good for you. I am more active so I lost 5 1/2 lbs a week Good luck keep us posted!

Valerie, i would like to keep seeing how u are doing on the ACV drinks…i bought a huge bottle of it for my family a few weeks ago but didnt know what dosage it was good to take. An old woman (herbalist ect. said that taking ACV was the best way to lose weight naturally) swears by it. Im gonna get on it right away after finally remembering to look it up and have now done some research on it.

I have the book Bragg- Apple Cider Vinegar and I knew the incredible benefits of this system but before I even read it I went and bought a gallon of ACV diluted to 5% acidity. Its a meijer brand, not organic. Should I even try it? Or just go buy the organic one? This is new for me but I dont even want to drink it if I wont benefit at all from it. your reply would be very helpful! Thanks

Howdy folks! Been on the up and down diet roller coaster most of my life. As concerning ACV, none of my research has lead to ACV as an effective appetite suppressant. However, the diet that is most effective for me and the one I always fall back on is the Mayo Clinic with certain variations that are geared towards my body personally. ACV is important because it is a natural diuretic and so is lemon juice. So be aware those lbs you are shedding might just be water. I’m just saying…

I’ve been using the organic apple cider vinegar for two weeks now and I feel great. I mix 3 teaspoons of vinegar in an 8 ounce glass of cold water…I add 1 teaspoon of honey and a pinch of baking soda to it( since vinegar is very acidic the baking soda cuts down the acidity).I heard that this drink is good for cleaning your Arteries as well :-) good luck to all !!

I prefer to take 2 teaspoons straight rather than mixing in water. Can that be bad for my health? Do I have to dilute it?

    [Reply]

    Sharon

    Patty,
I used to take the same ammount without diluting it, and a few months later I started getting problems. My stomach wouldnt let me eat certain foods and my esophegus was a bit damaged from the vinigar. It is high in acid and can be dangerous if its not properly diluted. If you mix it with honey, it will taste pretty good and alot better than drinking it straight. :)

I haven’t tried yet for weight loss, but plan to. 1 ounce apple cider vinegar mixed with 2 onc. water, 1 teaspoon sugar and 1/2 teaspoon baking soda is my husband’s go to remedy for acid reflux. From “The Top 50 Life Saving Secret’s of World’s Greatest Doctors” 1/4 cup water + 1/8 vinegar sweetened with saccharine taken before high carbohydrate meals improved insulin sensibility 40%. The theory is the vinegar inhibits the breakdown of carbohydrates thereby decreasing the blood glucose spikes that occur in people with diabetes.”

I am a skinny diabetic 2 and recently heard about ACV helping with glucose. I have never been overweight so I hoped it would be good for my diabetes and hopefully not lose any weight. It has really brought my numbers down. My A1C has gone from 7.2 to 6.8 and I have been using it for about 3 weeks. My Dr. says “keep up the good work.”

i just heard of the acv diet a couple of days ago and went out and bought the heinz brand but it is not ORGANIC so ive read that it should not be used, bragss or even trader joes or whole foods brand is what should be used ie organic. it should be diluted with 16 oz of water to 2tsp of acv and sipped NOT gulped, some people use the baking soda to lower the acid taste and this helps with the acv damage to the enamel of your teeth but be careful aswell because some folks may have a bad reaction to the baking soda. so…. im going to go ahead and try this diet but i am a big chicken when it comes to trying new thing and laugh as you will but i cant stand the thought of taking it with water so im going to try it with an organic juice such as acia. anyways ive notice not to many people are keeping their word and keeping us up to date with their progress…. i am going to do that for you guys, so wish me luck and i will post an update in about a week.

I have not used raw apple cider vinegar yet to help me with weight loss I never thought about that until now. I get the “mother” brand it’s all natural and you can get at any health food store and I’ve seen it at safeways and king supers.
My family has a hard time with heartburn and with high blood sugar as most of them are diabetic. We have mix it with just about anything and I just have used two-three of the cap full. If you use it once a day for about a month it will stop your heartburn or if you have heartburn take it. We’ve also noticed it helps keep the blood sugar down.
