Camp Jump Start Review
What You Should Know
Camp Jump Start is a weight loss program specifically for kids ages 10 to 17. It is not designed to be a “fat kids’ camp” but rather is a traditional co-ed camp which focuses on health and fitness. By promoting self-discipline and positive self-image, Camp Jump Start seeks to guide each child to reach their full, healthy potential!
Camp Jump Start was formed in 2003 as a way to blend camping, fitness, nutrition, health education and leadership training into a program that could lead to positive youth development. A large part of this program deals with confronting weight and health issues being experienced by its young participants. The program includes nutrition education, exercise that is designed to fit the campers’ weight level, behavior modification, stress management and family education; while focusing on the long-term maintenance of a healthy weight and life style. Camp Jump Start, which is located in Missouri, is currently run by Tom and Jean Huelsing. Tom is a youth sports coach with 20 years of experience, Jean is a nurse and educator who was a consultant on for the ABC TV documentary “Fat Like Me.” Camp Jump Start is an awarding winning program, accredited by the American Camp Association. Camp Jump Start is a comprehensive program designed to address the unique needs of children who are overweight. Because those who start out heavy at a young age usually go on to be over weight or obese adults, and are subject to many serious health risks and social consequences as a result; it is a good idea to address such an issue before it becomes an entrenched life style. Camp Jump Start seems to be run by caring and competent adults who employ a diverse program to combat not just the weight problems of the young campers, but other issues that might arise such as homesickness or shyness. While Camp Jump Start does seem to be a very good program, it might be rather expensive for some families – especially since transportation to and from Missouri is the families responsibility; remember when choosing a camp to take all the facts into consideration before registering for a program.
