What You Should Know
Capsigen is a weight loss supplement with the active ingredient garcinia cambogia. There have been mixed reports about the safety of this ingredient after the FDA warned Hydroxycut customers to stop taking supplements from the company that contained garcinia cambogia. Since those warnings, the safety of garcinia cambogia – particularly the active ingredient hydroxycitric acid – has been stressed by supplement manufacturers and dieters claiming clinical studies prove garcinia cambogia is safe and effective.
List of Ingredients
- Garcinia Cambogia
- Synephrine Caprylate
- Nettle Leaf Extract
- Phenethylamine HCL
- Inositol Niacinate
Let’s assume the FDA messed up and garcinia cambogia was not the ingredient that caused liver damage in dieters taking Hydroxycut products. Let’s also assume it is just a coincidence that Hydroxycut removed any trace of the ingredient from all products. If we look at clinical study published in trusted medical journals, you will not find any support for weight loss claims. One study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association describes a clinical trial with 135 subjects who failed to lose more weight taking garcinia cambogia compared to a placebo. The participants took the supplements for 12 weeks.
Synephrine Caprylate is listed as an appetite suppressant, for which there is plenty of support from people and companies selling synephrine supplements. Synephrine became popular when ephedra was banned, but the two ingredients do not work the same in the body. Synephrine constricts blood vessels to create a heat effect, but this heat is not associated with fat burn. The appetite suppression likely comes from the fact that synephrine is a stimulant. There is at least one report of heart attack associated with taking synephrine.
As if those two ingredients weren’t bad enough, Phenethylamine HCL is also part of the Capsigen formula. This ingredient is added to melt fat stores, but what it is more likely to do is increase heart rate for a very short period. The half life of Phenethylamine HCL is about 10 minutes, so by 20 minutes that effect is gone. However, in large doses, Phenethylamine HCL has been associated with schizophrenia.
