Bodybuilders and weightlifters have been long interested in nutrition and supplementation, and as a result there have been a number of products developed to help athletes in these areas develop muscle and burn fat. One such product is chromium picolinate, a product that is claimed to help users burn fats and carbohydrates, this improving muscle strength and reducing fats. The product is also claimed to help regular blood sugar levels, this reducing food cravings, and helping to regulate issues associated with type 2 diabetes.

Product Details

Chromium picolinate is usually able to be purchased as a vitamin supplement that is taken in tablet or pill form. Users are usually advised to take a particular dose on a daily basis. Users are advised against taking more then 1200 micrograms of chromium picolinate per day, as doing so can result in problems with organs such as the liver and kidneys. In addition, those with existing health problems, as well as pregnant or breastfeeding women, should avoid using this product.

Advantages

  • The product has been shown to help regulate insulin levels
  • The product may help suppress hunger
  • The product is relatively inexpensive

Disadvantages

  • The product is not designed to promote weight loss
  • The product has been associated with a number of side effects

Conclusion

Chromium picolinate has been shown to help regulate insulin levels, which may be good for those who are suffering from type 2 diabetes. However, diabetics should not self-medicate with this, or any other, products without first consulting with their doctor to make sure that doing so is safe and appropriate. However, while chromium picolinate may help regulate sugar levels, there is little indication that it can help promote weight loss and muscle growth without being teamed with a healthy diet and regular exercise. As such, this product is unlikely to be of much benefit for those looking to lose weight, and this is particularly the case if it is taken as a supplement in which it is the only active ingredient. In addition, this product can result in adverse side effects if taken in large doses, and should be avoided by those with existing medical conditions, or women who are breastfeeding or pregnant. When taken in large doses, this product may result in damage to the liver and kidneys, and has also been associated with heart irregularities in some individuals. Those looking for a product to help them lose weight would be better off looking for a program that encourages a healthy and balanced diet, and that incorporates a regular physical exercise program rather than relying on supplements in the hopes that they will help them shed weight.

Chromium carries a positive charge which is repelled by cell walls. However, when combines with picolinate which neutralizes the charge it is then able to transport glucose across the cell walls thereby reducing glucose in the blood stream.
