What You Should Know
Glutathione is a naturally occurring antioxidant that could be very effective in treating disease, cell damage and aging. Supplements are normally taken by mouth, but this degrades the glutathione leaving very little to be absorbed. An alternative in a medical setting is injecting the glutathione into a vein, but supplements should not be intravenously injected. In place of injection, experts suggest taking glutathione with a precursor to help absorption.
List of Ingredients
Glutathione is present in every cell of the body. It is typically consumed as part of fruits and vegetables when dieters eat a healthy diet. Poor eaters may have less glutathione than they need. Glutathione works in the cell to keep processes moving properly including the removal of toxins from cells and cell tissues.
During a major illness like cancer, the cells can become depleted of glutathione requiring supplementation. In order to boost glutathione levels in cells, some believe eating more fruits and vegetables is the best choice, but that is not the consensus with all supplement experts. Cysteine and other amino acids can work as precursors for glutathione and when taken together may result in more of the antioxidant being absorbed and utilized by cells.
Through glutathione supplements are available on the market; clinical research has yet to catch up with the buzz. No human studies could be found linking glutathione to weight loss, fat burn or increased energy. In fact, antioxidants are not typically used for these purposes anyway. What glutathione could be good for is fighting free-radical damage.
Free radicals are present in every body. They attack healthy cells, take over the cell functions and reproduce more free radicals. Each time a healthy cell is taken over; there is one less healthy cell in the body. This can cause faster aging and degradation of the skin.
There has been some reference to the effects of glutathione on cancer prevention or treatment. It is crucial to note that no such evidence has been found in clinical studies or even reported, so far as we could find. We did find that glutathione may actually help to increase the risk of cancer. By the age of 50 or 60, precancerous cells could be present in the body. Improving cell health, at this point, could improve the viability of the precancerous cells forcing them to become active.
Glutathione products are available from trusted supplement companies for as little as $9.99.
