Herbal Magic is a weight loss program that is marketed toward both women and men. This company is actually a nutrition and weight reduction franchise that offers over 350 branches throughout Canada. Herbal Magic incorporates everything from dietary supplements, to one-on-one counseling and grocery store foods. There are success stories posted on the official website for the Herbal Magic program. Product Features

Herbal Magic is a weight reduction program that endeavors to suit men, women and children with shedding unwanted pounds. This is a Canadian weight loss program with numerous centers available throughout Canada. Unfortunately the cost of the Herbal Magic program is not given on the official website. Advantages

  • All Herbal Magic dietary supplements can be easily and conveniently purchased through the official website.
  • There are success stories posted on the official website.
  • Healthy eating and regular exercise are encouraged with the Herbal Magic program.

Disadvantages

  • There doesn’t appear to be any actual clinical research posted on the official website.
  • There are no 100% money-back/satisfaction guarantees posted on the website.
  • Some ingredients found in Herbal Magic supplements may not be suitable for some individuals.
  • Herbal Magic seems to require a rather drastic lifestyle change, which some dieters may not care for or be capable of.
  • There are no free trial samples of Herbal Magic supplements offered on the official website.
  • Herbal Magic centers appear to only be available in Canada.

Conclusion

The Herbal Magic weight loss system is unique in some respects. On the bright side, this dieting program encourages a healthy diet and regular exercise. However, some dieters may not care for the notion of a weight reduction program that requires so much work. All in all, the Herbal Magic system does involve dietary supplements and a “healthy style” of living, but it’s probably a wise idea to check out some other programs that are currently available first. Especially since there is no membership price mentioned on the official website and Herbal Magic appears to only be available to those living in Canada.

I’m sixteen and I have been on HM for a week now, and have already lost 10lb (70 more till my UGW!). It’s been projected that I’ll be at my UGW by the end of December of this year. Because I’m a minor, HM only cost 530$ + supplements (Over 100$ for a month). This being said, yes, it is a lot of money. But. It’s a commitment. Since I had to spend so much money on this product, I’m extremely committed to this. I’m losing the weight fast and not cheating because I’m forced to be accountable for what I’m eating. Additionally, I needed someone I could be accountable to other than my parents/friends. I needed someone who was on the outside, and could actually tell me that it was bad for me to gain weight, and that it’s /not/ okay to be obese (the people in my life were too scared of hurting my feelings). They help provide the extra push.

There is also the issue of people saying that if you go on HM and stop, you gain everything back, plus more. This is if you leave right after the weight loss stage. There are two more stages that follow (stabilization, and maintenance). These are important stages! It’s where you learn to eat properly and learn how much you can eat to maintain the current weight. Many people who skip this stage will go back to their old eating habits and thus, gain everything back. By joining HM, you have to understand that you are likely going to need to attend a few times a week, for /at least/ a year. Weight loss is not the only step!

People also are saying a lot that you are left starving throughout the day. I, personally, am not in the least. To be honest – I feel like I’m eating all the time! The thing is, though, that I am simply eating the /right/ things. I am eating 4 servings of veggies, 3 of fruit, 3 dairy, 2 carb, and 2 protein. (From memory..) Thus, I’m not overeating on the things that will make me pack on the weight. I’ve had a salad this week that I couldn’t even fit into a whole bowl! I’m a fast eater – and it took me just about a half hour to finish it.
You can ask your supporter at HM to help you space out your meals if you’re a ‘snacker’ so that when you’re hungry, you can eat.

When signing up to HM it’s important to ask the right questions. I came in with a list of questions, and made sure they were being upfront about the prices (which they were). I was fully aware before I signed the agreements.

I apologize for how long this was – but I want to help people be informed! There aren’t many sites that are really giving detailed information about HM. They’re simply pointing out why people shouldn’t do it – instead of the reasons that they should!

Go to your phamacy and purchase Citosan and Chromium pills. These are the same substances contained in Herbal Magic which change metabolism and redirect fat. Save yourself hundreds of dollars! For food and exercise, simply google this information and educate yourself. Spend your money educating yourself and buying good nutritious foods. Jump on an exercise bike or go walking. Its really that simple!

Scam is not the right word. More like…waste of money. The ‘supplements’ do not provide any value that weight loss is achieved by sticking to a light version of the Canada Food Guide and exercise. Basically you’re paying for what amounts to a crutch to make up for low self-discipline.

I suspect based on the negative postings I read here in addition to the very poor treatment of employees, there are major financial issues going on with this company.

I joined herbal magic right after my wedding. I payed a very large amount of money to join as well as about $79.00 per week and another $30.00 per month. Of course I lost weight about 30lbs in the 2.5 months I was on it. Until I started noticing that I wasn’t using the washroom anymore. Maybe once a week. Then one day I couldn’t move my head. I had a migraine with pressure that was so fierce. I visited the hospital was put on a morphine drip and then sent home. Hours later I was back on the hospital. This went on for about 8 days. Finally one hospital did a scan and I had swelling in the brain. I was put on anti inflammatory medication as well as another morphine drip. I was sent home and lived on the anti inflammation’s and perks for about 10 days until the swelling went down and I could move my right side of the body once again. I have not touched one pill since from Herbal Magic and never had a problem since. I also have a friend who has tried it and for some reason continues to stay on it even after her hair has fallen out and now uses extensions! TERRIBLE!!!!!!

Everybody has their own opinion but I don’t think its a scam there are a lot of dieting scams out there. I personally have had success with herbal magic that I have not had with other diet pills. Ive already lost 30 lbs in 2 months. They don’t make you take anything extra unless you want, just the regular pills. Sorry if you had a bad experience

Unfortunately I have had similar problems. I lost a lot more money than weight. True, no one forces you the pills down your throat but they force you to buy and you have to take 9 caplets per day, you dont know what is in it, they dont look like herbal to me. plus, cancelling the membership and agreement after 1 month costs me aroung $1600. This is a ripp off.

    Hi
I am 61 years old and have 3 children. I have been overweight since the birth of my first. (37 YEARS AGO) I have tried every diet and program known to mankind. I even went through the program for gastric surgery, but I chickened out. I have been on HB for two months and I have lost 20 lbs and 12 inches. I do feel great. I am short 4′ 10″ weigh 230 now. I have very bad arthritis in my knees and that has improved. I am also diabetic and the reps take special care researching what I can and cannot take. My blood sugar was previously quite high despite many prescriptions, since being on HB my sugars have stabilized! I still take the meds, but do not need insulin. The weight loss is slow and steady. Yes it is expensive, but that makes me stick to it.. The girls are very, very friendly and supportive. They do not seem overworked or unhappy with their jobs. This program may not be for everyone, no program is. Don’t knock what you don’t understand. This grandma intends to reach her goal AND BE ONE HOT MAMA:) I’ll let you all know.

I think everyone should take a step back and reflect on their personal situation before harshly critiquing H.M. I joined in February of this year because I have 100lbs to lose, at 5’6″. Mentally, I am ready for a lifestyle change, and realize I cannot do this on my own through clean eating and exercise…otherwise I wouldn’t be at this weight. This program has been a godsend for me. I have lost 37lbs/40.5” so far, I am eating clean, my kitchen has been getting a fantastic work out as well, and I feel better than I have in years. The cost of the program keeps me motivated to stay on track, and my consultants are doing exactly what I paid for – KEEPING ME ACCOUNTABLE. I should feel like I failed MYSELF if I gain 0.2 lbs (which hasn’t happened yet). I did stop taking the products for one week as well, and I almost gnawed my leg off I was that hungry. The first few weeks will be a transition period – I was hungry at times and had to re-learn how to eat to keep my body satisfied. I am a recovering carb-o-holic. The key for me is to plan my meals and snacks for the day so I get a consistent balance of protein and veg/fruit with a carb thrown in here and there. The program is designed to reduce your calorie/food intake while teaching you a new way to eat. Once you reach your goal, you will be able to eat more but again you need to assess your age/height and activity level before making a blanket statement about how many calories you “should be” eating. Which leads to the last reason I joined HM – I continue to have coaching when I reach my goal weight for as long as I need to work through what I can eat WITHOUT PRODUCTS so I can maintain my goal weight. There are negatives and positives with all programs. The goal is to find one that works for your personality and budget and LOSE WEIGHT. This one is an A+ for me.

    [Reply]

    Sandy

Jamey, that is so great to hear! Congrats. I also had 100+ lbs to lose, and i did so well until I was within 60 lbs of my goal. Then they switched my program to less food and I was starved! But I did it..I hit my goal. During the stabilization part my family and I went away on vacation and i had gained about 6 lbs back…I know, it was my own fault but I deserved to enjoy my time away. When i got back from vacation, the coaches informed me that I would be put back on weight loss and have to pay the weight loss cost of the products which is 349 plus tax a mont instead of the 299 i was told i pay for the second phase. they stated that anyone who goes 5 lbs above goal HAS to go back on the weight loss time and the coached don’t have a choice as the computer does this automatically. In the end i have spent over 3K and have to be so careful so i am not charged to 349 month. Let’s face it, there may be times when we indulge a bit…then get right back on track….but the scale shows the gain and then you have NO CHOICE but to pay again.

I joined Herbal Magic and it was a horrible experience. I was harassed and bullied into visits. Once or twice a week was not enough. I paid over $100 a week and there was no room to move with the supplements. If you didn’t buy them, you weren’t in the program. I wish I could get my money back. I had a great experience with Jenny Craig, after my sons birth and I would rather go back there. I do not recommend

I just completed one month at Herbal Magic by taking supplements and eating a crash diet that left me starving most of the day. I walked away losing a total of no more than 2 pounds. My experience has taught me that there is no MAGIC in the herbal supplements at all. I cut my portions in half, reduced salt by half or more, and started to cook wheat free and eat only clean foods. You’d think that would do it alone. I even exercised more than usual to no avail.
I write this because I do not want to see anyone else mismanage their money the way I have done. I certainly could have put it to better use at a local gym for instance, or maybe a small getaway for the family.
When I asked about the guarantee to see results, they nit picked my eating journal to death and accused me of not following the program therefore I was not entitled to anything in return. As well there was a clause about a 10 day money back guarantee on the contract that I signed. Hmmmm, well nobody is going to quit within ten days of starting. The coaches themselves try to keep you motivated to stay on the program until your body kicks in and adjusts to your new way of eating. Again, that time frame has come and gone and now I am left with more than $1000 out of pocket :(

What steps did you take to cancell your agreement and stop going to herbal magic?

    [Reply]

    Jules

I had a worse experience. I did try to cancel 3 days after because I tried the supplements they hurt my stomach and had time to come down from the sales pitch…they cry they buy!!!
I asked for my money back they said No, but I was welcome to continue on program and buy more supplements until what I had paid for ran out. I called head office about it and they said there was Nothing they could do about it. The franchises are individually owned and its up to the owner.
It upsets me to this day, the lack of recourse I had. I too really had good results on Jenny Craig but the processed food and my tummy didn’t mix. They were great there though.

Herbal Magic is so expensive and not for the common working person. it is $349.00 a month for mandatory products….$14.00 a week for weight loss services that they want you to pay upfront plus $199 for their food list to follow. You Must purchase your products a month in advance and it is automatically debited from you bank account or credit card…sounds like shoty gym practices. Staff are over worked and under paid..with no nutritional back ground…our education on products are limited to what the company wants us to project to you-to make the product apply to your need…we have a product for every symptom or desired result that you need. You can find these products in ANY store at the fraction of the cost. We are paid on commission..therefore there is a significant interest for us to recommend optional product to you-even if you don’t need it…because that’s how we make our pay cheques worth working for. If you don’t spend….we don’t make any money and our job is at risk. I am currently a staff member at Herbal Magic…I have been with the company for over a year and am looking for another job as I ethically can no longer work for a company that cares more about money than they do about you the client.

BEWARE!!! It is a 600.00 sign up and then 100.00 per month and worst of all it does not work any better than being on a strict diet of your own. They say your sign up price is for the year …but if you don’t attend they require a full sign up cost of 600.00 again….8 weeks absence. I was emailed and warned that if I didn’t come in I would have to pay full price. This place is a total scam….there is no pill in the world that burns 7000 calories a day ( that’s their claim )

saw your commercial – enjoyed most of it. Person seemed real – made you want to try your program. However, you had 1 male that really bothered me. He spoke of upper management – ya ya ya – I am home in my nest on my time not work (relaxation time) and to have this man who thinks he is a TEAM PLAYER and is impressing his boss – came across as a #$% lick looking for a pat on the back. Yes I understand you need men in your commercial and the dad was great with his daughter – he felt warm. The other guy ship him off to upper management tell with his last pay check from Herbal Magic – put the bus driver in or letter carrier, or the office coffee maker. Leave the guy who has spent to many days sitting in a boardroom being a wanna be CEO. I watch because I like to see the before and afters of real people not movie stars who can afford anything. But people like you and I who have to work for a living. Sorry so long winded but he is annoying big TIME.

I have a family member who is currently a center director for this company and the horror stories of abuse and intimidation by the regional manager and those above have left me on more than one occasion wanting to call the employment standards and complain. Long hours with no break or lunch and if they do try to go for planned lunches and the reg. man. finds out they are told they get enough time not talking to customers that they do not need breaks. Many times I have been told that they are belittles if sales are slow and told sell or your job is on the line. Now I except it is a sales position and one should be expected to perform but to be humiliated because the day is slow or to have their faults bragged about by management to other centers is below the belt. To add insult to injury they have just recently introduced a new commission structure which after crunching the numbers relates to a $13,000.00 loss in income annually. They were given no warning that things were to be changed. Management has refused to answer basic questions and will not return calls. This now means that the center director who is base salary plus commission must now figure out how to take a pay cut of $1,000.00+ a month. It also means that they are working a 50 hour week for $13.00 an hour with no overtime pay allowed as they are salary.
This company is now all about new member revenues which means they are to focus on getting new people in and signed up. My question there is what happens to the client care for the existing members if all the employees time is spent trying to sign up new members.
My relative worked out the numbers on the new pay plan and it showed an earned commission of around $100.00 verses on the same amount of sales in the old plan the income was $600.00. That’s a $500.00 cut in a 2 week period.
Now add into this equation that the company supplies them with 1-2 new leads a week and then figure to earn back the lost wages they now have to add 10 new members a week to be at the same pay grade and you can see where the problem is. This will transfer itself to client care for when an employee is not earning enough to sustain a life style or is hungry to make ends meet no matter how much you care about your clients self preservation will kick in and it will be all about what pays the most. Beware new members for when a company starts doing this to their employees it usually means their is financial problems going on.

Thanks for your input. in the past I have challenged the owner/owners to step up, they obviously don’t have the cajones to do it. The current upper management is probably has misguided as any I have ever seen! No imagination, no creativity! The only thing they can do is browbeat their employees into submission and then fire them!

    [Reply]

You are right. I know someone who works for them, they say they are under constant pressure to get new clients. They told me a while ago the company went from customers paying weekly to customers having to pay for the entire months supply of product. In addition they said there is a 30 day cancelation policy and a cancelation fee of $200.00. Their employees are sometimes asked to work 10 hour days, only paid for 8 hours though and recently had to work 12 hours! Aren’t there laws against that?

HM is a horrible place to work. They prey on single moms with no education and who are desperate for work. They bully you to stay late…promise you time off for over time and NEVER follow through. Have you ever wondered why there is such a huge staff turn over??? They don’t even have a human resource department. Staff have a quota to meet…..so you can be sure there will be products shoved at you-even if you don’t need them. HM cares more about money than they do clients or staff. They prey on the weak….not a good company. Elizabeth Manley is no longer a spokes person….ask the staff how many clients they lose in 1 month…..the average client joins for 1 year…the average client last 3 months…figure it out folks….all they care about is your money.

If there was list of the worst employers in Canada, they would without a doubt rank #1, every year! Their employees, outside of franchises, are usually in one person centers, work 9 hrs/day, no time for lunch or coffee breaks and on at least 3-4 times a month are demanded to work an additional 2 hrs after their stores close! Nice, some weeks 50+ hrs. and no overtime They often browbeat, humiliate their employees and motivate through fear!
Great company and oh by the way, are constantly advertising for new people to our join our “team”. The owner of HM should be very proud of their company and the dimwits that manage it!

I am not an employee and YES I have also purchased my product by phone. I live in a rural location and have on occasion found myself running out of the meal replacement shakes or bars. I have called in my credit card number and they have shipped the product to me. Perhaps the locations I have been to provide better or more personal customer service under the direction of the manager they have.

you can (get shipped) bars and shakes but not their essentials weight loss products. You must have a medical reference done to make sure you are able to take the pills and make sure if you are on any medications that they won’t effect them. After they meet you and know all this information, then they can ship you products. Herbal Magic is really good at looking after their customers and their health.

When I started I was wearing a 30 jeans and a size 10 dress. My shirts were a large or extra large. When finished, my shirt was a small, jeans 27, and dress size 6. Its been 4 years and Ive gained back 4 lbs. Do I think it was the supplements that helped? No, probably not. What helped me was the constant phone calls that dragged my ass into the center and the couching … catering the program to my lifestyle.

I just joined HM last week and am very excited about the progress already. I was very worried as I am a spur of the moment person and joined fairly quickly and after reading the CBC story was concerned. However I have been sitting here reading all the comments…good and bad and I have to say am relieved. I felt good about this program when I joined. The staff are amazing and they were very clear on the price upfront. I know what I signed up for and feel it will be worth it. I have tried weight watchers, doing it on my own, etc and nothing was working. I need the support and am already getting it ten fold. I am very glad I joined and am excited about the future! I agree with one post that said the supplements are not meant to make you magically lose weight over night. Well said, but I have to say I feel better already and I’m sure it’s a combination of both.

I have a thyroid issue and that is part of my issue with weight . I found HM counsellor to be pushy and not straight forward about the costs . I knew that it was 1000.00 for the membership, but was not told that the supplements would be 80 bucks a week !! Misleading sales tactics! Cheaper ways to lose weight! Cheaper products out there too.

Correct. The membership is extremely expensive and don’t tell you it will cost you over $90 a week for me. So far their program is not working that well. To loose the lbs. I must eat way less than what they suggest because my system is extremely slow to digest.

I joined HM is Sept.2011. I am 55 yrs old, 4’11″ and have shed 30 lbs. I love eating my own food and it has taught me to use portion control. I have never felt or looked better. I live 40 mins from the HM Centre, when they said they wanted me to visit 3x a week I said I couldn’t do it. I work full time, but I could come in once a week. They were ok with that. What I like is my own choice of food, a plan to go by and a guide on how much to help me shed the weight. I don’t know about the pills but I take them. I am sure they do something as other diet plans gave me leg cramps and the tired all the time feeling. I don’t get that from HM. The diary…awesome. I make sure I account for everything that I eat. It also lets them at the centre help you in areas where you could be having problems. Yes it is costly, but it has worked for me and I am so worth it!! If it isn’t working then you need to look at what you are doing. This many people who are succsessful on the program can’t all be wrong. I also watched the show on HM and question why they only interviewed 2 women who were clients. Sorry this is just my opinion and the program has and is working for me. Good luck everyone on your venture which ever program you use. Donna Notice I used the word shed rather then lost….I don’t want to find those 30 lbs that are gone.

I visited HM today. After reading all your comments I am thinking it’s a 50/50 type of decision, some it seems to work and some it does not. One thing I was surprised about that the woman did not know about what foods cause you to create sugar in your body, I read some of their recipes and found some of these foods in them (ex: carrots cause you to create sugars once digested. I am still trying to decide. I have to say over the years I was going to Curves and lost the most weight there but had to stop for personal reasons but Curves is much cheaper, just a little harder to force yourself to get there but once you do you feel great. Still deciding

The program is a total rip-off!!!I enrolled last year and had some sucess. When I signed uo,I gave them approx.$1000 for a years membership, with the understanding,I could get my money back if I changed my mind.I requested the refund within the grace period as I decided I would rather pay as you go was a better option for me,The Manager said she’d submit my request and the run-around started. After many attempts, the story was the person responsible was out-town,or some other B.S. story. It is an over-priced program that pushes you to buy their products, which, according to a pharmacist told me,similar products are available over the counter at less than 1/3 the cost. The people that work for Herbal Magic are very nice and concerned with the customer, but their management is pathetic. My advice to anyone considering H.M.,is to back away and explore other resources, such as Weight Watcher’s.The H.M. program will work if you’re willing to buck-up to their overpriced program.

I have been on the HM diet for 2 months, in the first couple weeks I lost 4 pounds and have not budged from there. I am a student in college taking a very intense/stressful program and I stay very strict on the diet. When I ask why my weight is not moving they just answer that it must be the stress or that Im not eating enough. I also told them that I have been experiencing heart palpitations and flutters in my chest and asked if it could be side effects of the supplements. All they answered was that they never heard of anyone having that and that I should go see my docter. Its disappointing that they display no knowledge about their products and that they have no other suggestions for a busy lifestyle other then pack a hard boiled egg for lunch.

I had the same heart palpitations, chest pain and flutters in my chest. I stopped HM because of this, and of course they said is not a problem with their products. However, I have noticed that on their bars, for instance, there is absolutely no ingredient listed, they are very sweet and they gave me a stomach pain. Must not be natural. Is it true they do not “force” you to buy the products, however this comes automatically off your credit card every single week for a price of $90 per week. The fish oil they prescribed gave me some chest pain, when I stopped taking them, the pain was gone. I did not like the side effects, and I did not like the fact that they tried to convince me is something wrong with me having these side effects, not a problem with their products. Really, we can all buy a box of Vit B complex, take that every day and we can have our own HM “treatment”.

I was also told I was not eating enough…..and I wasn’t. They were correct. My body had gone into starvation mode and was holding on to every calorie I provided it with. I increased my food consumption and am now losing on average 2lb per week. I do not pay $90 week for the meal replacement bar & shake combo. Payment is not a bank debit or credit card charge. I pay in whatever location I go to. Cash, debit or credit card is accepted. If you have heart palpitations of course the first person you should see is your physician to rule out any medical reasons and you should stop taking or eating anyting that has recently been added to your daily regimen. They advised you correctly! The did not say it could NOT be their product they told you they had not had anyone else report those symptoms to them.

I lost – not pounds – but my best friend. His family urged him to loose the spare tire around his waist, off to HM he went, shed the weight, the spare tire came back after a few months. We had planned to go for lunch. That day he complained of horrible stomach pains. A few days later, he was in the hospital, four weeks later he passed away at age 33 from stomach cancer. Always get the cause of excess weight checked out first before entering on any program. What may be good for some may aggrevate an underlying condition or at least not improve it.

Well, I’m so glad I have found this site, as I have recently went into the HM clinic to see about joining, but like everyone is saying it’s expensive! So this is basically the reason I haven’t joined yet!! My doctor says I should do WW, I did this program after I had my first child, and I did very well with it, but now I have my second child who is six years old now and I have all my weigh back on I am now the weight I was when I went in to have my second child, which is kinda gross for me and needing to get it off!! I recently joined a bootcamp, and now I’m seriously considering HM along with my bootcamp!! I just wanted to put this on here!! Thanks!

since I have tried so many other diets, HM was a breath of fresh air. Weight watchers did not give me the individualised support I need. HM is very balanced, used normal foods and is very individualised. I happy with the support they are giving me Yes, the supplements are expensive. I have decided it’s worth it. I have put money in so many other programs that have not worked. this is working. Barely 3 weeks in and I have already lost 7 lbs.

I am 5ft 11 inches and was always thin (an athletic size 4-6) until the year my dad died and i did my masters degree-i turned to food. my weight ballooned before kids (228lbs) I decide to lose the weight before I tried to have kids. My weight went down to 165, I kept it off for 2 years, had three kids, and went back. After 11 years and the kids I was back up to 203lbs. After the second round I went down to 175. If I had worked out and skipped the junk food and alcohol I could have kept it off-but that’s no fun. But it is the difference between a size 8 and a size 12. I am currently 188. I have started to run again and will try to gt it off in the next year. Good luck everyone.

He is no longer on meds and did NOT have surgery! People reverse health issues all the time simply by losing extra weight, eating healthy food and exercising. Perhaps, massino, it is you that should do their homework.

I do not like the supplements either. the pills. I did not know they had wshellfish in them. I am a Jew and not allowed to eat that. Yesterday I went to weigh in and I was ready to ask for my refund. But when I weighed in I was 2.5 lbs less. wow. So I talked to them about doing the program without supplements. They said the only option they have without supplements is with bars. 2 meals of bars and one fresh food meal. Well I liked the bars but good food is better. Perhaps the best thing so far is that I have created a new habit to check and write down everything I eat and dringk 8 glasses of water a day and watch my carbs. I was eating too many carbs. So far in the last 6 weeks I have lost 10 lbs. I am an avid jogger too. So that helps. But I find the pills stimulate too much ketosis. One needs ketosis in order to lose weight (learnt that from Atkins); but I was too stimulated and felt irritable and moody ; would get angry sometimes; Aloso my sex life suffered. My wife and I are both on the program and we didn’t have sex for more than 4 weeks. Usually once a week we do. So I guess it is not all it is cracked up to be. Certainly I cannot do the shellfish in the pills; not kosher.

I was on herbal magic last year, I had a reaction to the supplements and found out that some of them, as well as their food supplements, had shellfish in it, which they knew I was allergic too. I continued to go to the meetings and journal review dates without taking the supplements. I was then informed that I could no longer be a member due to the fact I wasn’t taking the supplements. I asked for my money back as I paid 100% in full and they refused. HM is junk and the only thing they did for me is gave me the knowledge I have now to cut down food intake.

I used to work Herbal Magic but their company morals and values are horrible…I’m sure members have seen a significant turn over rate!!!! They are in process of firing, or forcing employees to quit so they can do a re-hire all over again…..they had just done one back in March 2010….. I do not recommend herbal magic to anyone! I joined HM in Sept of 2009, I’ve lost 80 lbs and 92 inches. I feel fantastic. I take the supplements regularly as that is just part of the program. Do they work, I am not sure, however I am not willing to risk not taking them. This is a definate lifestyle change, not just a diet. I have been stuck at the same weight for some time and will be entering the stabilization phase soon. I exercise regularly as well. Yes, the program is expensive and so are the supplements, but I decided that I and my health are worth it. Any program is just what you will make of it, only you can make it work.

I started HM at 230lbs (5’4″) and am currently at 168lbs! I am here to say it works! Now, that being said, any plan will work if you use it properly! HM worked for me because I HAD to stay accountable to the councellors and there was no way I was spending $50/week on supplements and cheating! I would only be cheating myself (same on any program) but the financial end of things helped to keep me on track. I’m still plugging away and although I strayed off plan and gained a bit of weight (totally knew what I was doing eating cookies/cakes/fastfood) during the holidays and while I quit smoking as soon as I got back to eating healful foods in appropriate portions the weight was gone again in no time. I didn’t gain because I stopped using “their plan” I gained that weight because I was eating crap and not moving! Either way I’m aiming for 130lbs and know that I can do it at a nice steady 1.5-3 lbs a week!

I’ve lost 4 lbs in 4 days, and am excited to see my final results after the next 31 lbs are gone. I have personally found that the supplements help me a lot. As an added measure with the supplements, I try to drink one or two glasses of water at least 15 minutes before each meal to help lessen my appetite while eating. =) It works, and I will stick with it as long as necessary!

I was on Herbal Magic(old program) for 4months, I lost 16lbs in the first month. I was very excited about this but then I started to get stomach cramps and feel it was from all the pills that I was taking.
Taking all those pills every month cannot be healthy for you.
The fact that they have jacked up there prices without giving their customers the option of the old plan is just ridiculous.
So they come up with a new product(Advansa)that apparently speeds up weightloss so now they can up there pricing?
I felt out of all the weightloss options out there HM was reasonably priced for what they offered. Now I see there just like any other gimmick out there…they just want your money, and now more of it!

I weighed myself Christmas Eve 2009 and was just under 190 lbs and I’m 5″8 with a curvy body. I was thinking oh my god what am I going to do?
I worked at health food stores before so I had a clue at least about the gym, supplements etc.
However whatever I did, what diet I tried, nothing worked.
I was so tired of being unsuccessful and feeling fat.
So basically I went to Herbal Magic in my small town and signed up and used my xmas money. Best money I ever spent.
My goal was 140, however when I got to 150 the workers suggested I stop because I would look too thin. I appreciated their honesty and went on the maintenance program.

HM is garbage. Learn to research what you put in your bodies and where to buy the things that ACTUALLY work for a fraction of the cost. Really all you need is a good meal plan, stop eating shite and exercise intensely.

    [Reply]

    Meaghan

I think your reply is really inssensitive. We all understand that the basics of weight loss are eat less exercise more. Some people need support and encouragement and HM can provide that support and education. I don’t think anyone here is denying that HM is a product, the question becomes will it be a good fit for you. I don’t think you have the authority to decide that for others. If there was only one product that ACTUALLY worked I think we would all know about it by now. I would say most products work for some people, it’s finding the one that’s right for you. Nuff said!

I started HM 2 weeks ago. I also started eating alot less and exercising like crazy. I have lost 5 pounds. I find the staff ok. Not overly excited about anything. Staff aren’t consistant either. One will do a thorough look at your meal plan and give suggestions and the other just looks at it and gives it back. I find \I’m hungry all the time and the staff comment was “you will get use to that” The only benefit I find is I weigh in and get measured once a week so it’s like \i have to answer to someone. Well I can answer to my husband instead of a stranger. It is expensive and I don’t think the pills are worth the price. If you eat less but right and exercise you can loose weight. I did notice on the HM web site before I joined it said you do not have to take the pills. That’s why I went. Now I go back to their web site and it’s been taken off. I use to belong to TOPS “Take of Pounds Sensibly” about 12 years ago. They follow the Canadian food guide and their is group support. I got alot of good recipies and gained a lot of friends. We would have potlucks with all healthy recipies. It was great. I think I will rejoin them.

Jim, I was wondering if you could clarify something for me. When you say you were made to buy the journal do you mean the starter book with all the food options or the daily journal that you had to keep and take it for your centre to review?

    [Reply]

    Donna

The first food journal for recording daily intake is included with the cost of registration. If you want to continue using the HM journal after the inital one is complete, you must BUY it! If I remember correctly, the cost for me was $4.50 about 4 months ago. I was shocked.
Like everything else in HM, it’s a money making scam.
From my own experience, the “Coaches” are not professionally trained & they are not particularly helpful.
They are really glorified sales people making comission on the number of memberships & products that they sell. There’s a supplement for every possible weight- related issue, but at a high cost. The supplements DO NOT result in weight loss; diet & exercise will. If you take the supplements but do not follow the HM diet, you will not lose weight. That is the underlying “scam” of HM.

    [Reply]

    Charline

I’ve never had to buy any additional food journals. It must depend on the personnel at each Centre. I started this program Nov 2010 and I have lost 41lbs so far. It is true that you have to eat right and exersice to lose weight. I’ve notice that once I slowed down on exercise and relaxed on my food choices I would plateau. I haven’t felt hungry unless I go off the schedule. I recommend this program to someone who is ready to commit to a lifestyle change. These aren’t ‘magic’ pills that will have you waking up overnight half your size. It’s a program that will teach you how to make eating healthy and making healthy choices a part of your life.

I looked at this for a long time before joining and it only just occured to me to post back. The HM girls at my clinic in Ottawa were ok but thats not why I succeeded. I needed to weigh in 3 times a week to be accountable to someone. Yeah Ia gree the pills dont do a hell of a lot but thats their business. But I will say one thing for them, because they cost so much, its not worth cheating on the program.

All the arguments aside. here are the facts.

Yeah- its expensive. But when you are looking at over 100lbs to loose… BMI surgery looks costly too.

The pills, I agree are not usefull, but that part is their business. They do ok things, but dont dramatically alter your results. But they are mandatory for the program… so I just figure any program will do that. Jenny craig you buy their food and never learn to do anything on your own. Weight watchers actually makes you pay for support… so pick you poison.

HM its all your own cooking, own shopping. IT trains you to set yourself up for a lifestyle change. Becuase you dont get the easy way out. They dont say the pills do anything, but it is a part of their business.

but the only thing that really matters… does it work???

    Yeah. it really does.

I joined in APril 2009. at 5’3″ is was just over 230 lbs and 23 years old. I was supposed to be the girlin bikinis not the fat girl.

    By February 2010, I was 150lbs. I went form a size 18 to size 6.

For personal reasons I left the program in feb 2010 for a little while. I did not gain an ounce back.

I just rejoined in September 2010. My goal is to get to 125. I set that goal. My healthy weight range is 141 -105 at my height. SO im aiming for the middle.

They let me leave without being mean. They welcomed me back with big hugs.

Say what you want about the expenses and the useless pills. But Ineeded to change my life, and they let me do that.

using my own food, my own kitchen and having accountability to HM and myself, i kept everything off and am in the home stretch.

Shame on anyone who puts them down without due cause.

As far as the pills go. I take them now. As soon as Im done I wont and I know, I will be able to keep it off, because I have learned so much about nutrition and portion control.

They have a stablizing and a maintenance program to ensur eyou succeed.

All I got from weight watchers was a bill a nd very little success..

the question is then… what will work for you? complaining? pre packaged food coated in sodium and nitrates? or food. real food.

    Good luck on your journeys!

I’m looking at becoming a “health coach” with this company….maybe that will be my way of helping her and others. I have not found that I am bored with the diet because of an awesome coach. She has shared many ideas on how to “spice” up my meals and it has worked. I started out thinking I did not have the will power but had incredible support from the gals at the clinics. They worked around my time frame and together WE MADE IT WORK. The pills……well don’t really know for sure. I took them religiously and I have never been hungry or unsatisfied. I have cheated on a couple occasions like the chocolate cake for a birthday but now find that I don’t even like what I liked before. Still 12 pounds to go and YES I will make it. Would I do this weight loss a different way. NO. I had to learn to eat properlay and with some portion control. Instead of several cups of pasta I am now satisfied with 1/2 cup. I feel great and look great. Wish I had done it MUCH sooner.

I agree with Diane & thought the same thing — higher dress sizes are all even numbers; I imagine they counted each size as 2. Even then it seemed a bit “miraculous” to me.
Eat healthy; exercise – no “magic” pills I think.

What a joke. Recently saw your commercial advertizing Herbal majic with Elizabeth Manley. One person claimed a weight loss of 62 lbs with a drop of 16 dress sizes, impossible. Another said she ahd lost 22 lbs and dropped 8 dress sizes, again impossible. Everyone knows a proven healthy weight loss ratio is one dress size for every 10 lbs lost. Everyone in this commercial was way off. Shame on you Elizabeth Manley for supporting this product. All comments and reviews on the Herbal Majic website are negative. Shame, shame, shame.

Diane – actually your comments are “impossible.” As a human being you should know that statistics are far to general to be accurate. Results are results, just because you cannot achieve the same, don’t attack their Ad campaign. Get your facts straight, so you don’t look like an idiot. There are many, many factors which affect how a person looks as they loose weight. Height is one of them. Two individuals of drastically different heights are going to loose lbs, total inches, and dress sizes in completely different ways. Of course Herbal Magic plays this to their advantage, and does not reveal the height of the individual they are highlighting to play up the success of their paying clients. Don’t be the person who opens her mouth just to be heard, it’s not attractive. Think before you speak.

I was on HM for two years, when it first began. I was a size 8 in dress size and pant sizes and went down to a 1 sometimes a 0 within the year, I lost ten pounds the first month. It is real and effective, it is drastic in lifestyle if you’re not used to it, and it is expensive but it works! I maintained the weight and even went down to 98 lbs. It was a good experience especially if you have been heavy for a few years after birth.

If you were a size 8 and felt it necessary to go to a size 1, you have a serious issue.

I am now with herbal magic and am only 4’10″ tall…I was 191lbs when I started and I after only two months I have lost 20 lbs and 25 inches over all…so say whatever you want, my consultants are nice and personable, and they really care about my success on the program…after trying to lose weight for 16 years I really needed the help and I am feeling sooo much better now then I did two months ago…

I forgot I had written this. Yes, I am very petite. My median weight when I first started was 96-102. I gained 68 lbs with my first child. My knees could not take it. I was previously so active and light. But during pregnancy became diabetic and bedridden. After 3 years I finally committed to losing that weight and feel healthy again. No, I had no issues. I am small and small boned!

I watched the episode on market place about herbal magic, and it is very dissapointing. I have had a great experience with HB in my erea, they told me the cost up front for the membership, the supplements, and showed me a sample menu, so I could see for myself if I could do it. Well I have been doing the HM diet for over two months now, I am back to my prepreg size and I feel great the HM consultants do not push any products on me and it is great to go in and speak with them 3 days a week and you feel like a person not a number. It worked for me but only because i like eating helthy food to began with and I will continue to eat this way after I am done with HM. But I can see how it wont always work mout for others if they go eat hamburgers and fries and chocolate most of the time with lack of exercise. If you want to lose weight and notice a difference quickly so you will be encouraged to follow a better life style than yes do the Herbal Magic diet it really works, and I feel grteat about myself!

You may want to watch the CBC’s “MarketPlace” investigation on this before you join.

I joined HM 3 months ago; unfortunately, I did not see CCBC’s story prior to this.
From my own experience, what works in achieving weight loss,is the very low calorie diet.Anyone who follows a balanced diet of app.900 calories daily, will lose weight without the HM supplements. They are very costly & do not suppress food cravings or aid in weight loss. I stopped taking them for 1 week but continued on the diet & still lost 3 lbs. So save your money; if you are committed to weight loss you will be successful on a low calorie diet. It does help to keep a food journal. If you really want to take supplements they are available from other nutrition centres at a fraction of the cost.

Donna, that is very sound advice! For the majority of people eat less (or eat better) and move more does the trick!

    WOW!

I worked for Herbal Magic AND am a previous client. Not on ANY program does it condone 900 calories a day! ANYWHERE, EVER! Our clients don’t even count calories its measured by food allotments which work out to be between 1200 and 1400 calories so clearly this person is dishonest, a disgruntled employee or didn’t comply to program. 900 cal a day would put your body into starvation and ultimately upon eating you would gain weight….

    Donna,

Eating only 900 calories a day is starving yourself. Health Canada recommends a balanced diet of at least 1200 calories, any less makes your body think you are in a famine and can actually cause you to gain wait, especially once you have reached your weight loss goal and start eating a little more. you should aim to lose between 1 to 2 pounds per week, any more and your health could suffer due to lack of nutrients.

I did herbal magic for a year. For the first 5 weeks I could have eating my entire fridge by the time I got home after work. I lost 27 lbs. It’s not possible to maintain that tiny amount of food and stay sane.
My diet was 1/4 cup oatmeal for breakfast with one serving of applesauce in it. 1 cup of coffee w/cream (nobody is making me give up coffee cream). At 10am it was 12 almonds and a small fruit. Lunch was 1/2 cup meat with veggies. 2pm it was a sugar free rice pudding, 4pm was 1/2 cup yogourt and then dinner was another 1/2 cup meat and veggies. That’s it my friend in a nutshell.
They made me feel like i was going to the principal’s office if I went up .2 of a lb. I hated it but did it because I was contractually obligated.

well I am very disappointed, I joined 2 months ago. My husband and I went in for my weigh inn, I was devasted at the conversation I had with them. I loined payed $377 dollars for 4 bottles of bills, they told me I would start losing weight, LOL then when I go in for last meeting, I ask about how I can loss weight, they said they can help but in order for me to loses weight I would have to buy the real stuff in the back and it would cost me over $600, so my question is WHY DID I SPENT OVER three hundred in the beingging. I expect a answer back, Iown a restaruant and I will start telling people what I went threw
