What You Should Know
I-GH-1 is a growth hormone stimulating supplement from LG Sciences. Interestingly, this supplement says growth hormones are at their highest right before a workout but GHenerate, another growth hormone supplement by LG Sciences, claims growth hormone levels are at their highest at night during sleep. If we overlook these contradicting statements we find that I-GH-1 does not necessarily work as described.
List of Ingredients
GH Secretagogue Complex: Arginine Pyroglutamate, Ornithine AKG, Mucuna Puriens (standardized for L-Dopa), Astragalus Membranaceus (Root), L-Lysine.
Arginine Pyroglutamate is listed as a growth hormone stimulator on several websites. One website includes links to clinical research to back up this claim, but the study does just the opposite. According to this research study completed by the International Journal of Applied and Basic Nutritional Sciences, supplementing with amino acids like Arginine, Lysine and Ornithine does not increase growth hormone levels during exercise. The researchers went on to suggest bodybuilders NOT use amino acids for this purpose. Ornithine and Lysine, also included in the I-Gh-1 supplement, are thus rendered ineffective.
Mucuna Puriens is often used to increase libido in men and women. However, this particular Mucuna Puriens is standardized for L-Dopa. L-Dopa is also known as levodopa. Though the effects of L-Dopa are clearly stated in medical literature, the substances cross into the brain whereas Dopamine cannot. In a clinical setting, L-Dopa is always administered with a DOPA decarboxylase inhibitor (DDCI). Camellia Sinensis may work, but it is not included in this supplement. If there is no DDCI taken with L-Dopa side effects could include irregular heart rhythms, hypotension, loss of hair, hallucinations and nausea when taken with no food. L-Dopa should not be taken with protein as it stops absorption.
Astragalus Membranaceus may increase sweating and reduce fatigue, but this has not been proven in clinical studies.
I-GH-1 sells for $36.99 on various vitamin websites. LG Sciences sells the product on the official website as well.
- I-GH-1 contains L-Dopa which could be dangerous if not supplemented correctly.
- Research states amino acid supplementation will not boost growth hormone secretion.
- LG Sciences uses contradicting statements in terms of when growth hormones are secreted.
Aside from the contradicting remarks, LG Sciences may be offering a supplement that is unsafe for use. L-Dopa needs to be consumed with a DDCI to prevent side effects. Some of the potential side effects like hypotension and irregular heart beat can be life threatening. With this in mind, we are not going to support using I-GH-1. Bodybuilders should know that the effects of L-Dopa even when paired with the right ingredients are lessened when taken with protein. As most bodybuilders tend to drink protein shakes daily, this could be a significant problem when utilizing the properties of L-Dopa.
