What You Should Know
Meratol is a UK-based weight loss supplement that claims to absorb carbohydrates and reduce water retention with a cactus extract. There is no official ingredient list though a general list of ingredients is published on the official website. Meratol makes a long list of claims, none of which are backed with clinical evidence directly linked to the product. The clinical references focus on individual ingredients and none include a link to the journal where the study was published. Dieters can purchase Meratol directly from the manufacturer.
List of Ingredients
Prickly Pear, Brown Seaweed Extract, Cactus Extract and Capsicum Extract.
Prickly pear is listed as an ingredient to increase metabolism. We found no indication that prickly pear has that effect on the body. Instead, we found evidence that prickly pear is a great source of antioxidants that may help relieve pain. This is a positive benefit for improved health, but not for increased weight loss.
Brown seaweed extract is supposed to absorb 82-percent of carbohydrates. Again, we could not find any clinical reference that seaweed has that effect on the body. As far as we know, there are no natural substances that absorb carbohydrates.
Cactus extract is an extremely general term that could mean nopal cactus, hoodia gordonii or some other form of cactus. The product description claims the cactus is included as a diuretic. While diuretics are not safe for use as a weight loss product, we doubt the ingredient in question will have that effect. Instead, we assume the cactus will work as an antioxidant. If the ingredient is Hoodia, it will have no effect on the dieter at all.
The final ingredient is Capsicum Extract or hot peppers. This ingredient is typically included as a natural fat burner or to help other ingredients absorb more quickly. Meratol lists the ingredient as a natural fat burner. Capsicum will not boost metabolism as much as the dieter may like and the effect may not promote weight loss.
Meratol sells on the official website for $50 US per one-month supply. Shipping and handling is extra.
