Overview

What is Metamucil?

Metamucil is a dietary fiber supplement formulated with psyllium husk, purportedly designed to enhance digestive health, regulate cholesterol levels, manage blood sugar, and aid in appetite control, according to the claims made by its manufacturer. The product asserts its ability to deliver a notable dose of high-quality fiber with each serving.

The primary objective of Metamucil is to optimize the digestive function of individuals, offering a purportedly healthy approach to weight management and appetite suppression.

Positioned as a solution for metabolism-related concerns, Metamucil is available in various formats, including powdered drink mixes, capsules, and wafers, each available in a range of flavors. The active ingredient in Metamucil is psyllium seed husks.

Manufactured in Phoenix, Arizona, by Procter & Gamble, Metamucil aims to cater to individuals seeking support in their digestive and metabolic well-being, as per the manufacturer’s assertions.

  • International Journal of Pharmaceutics – Additional benefits of psyllium include helping with diarrhea and constipation.
  • Appetite – Then we have the possible effect of psyllium as an appetite suppressor, which has been studied many times before. According to this journal, “psyllium reduces hunger feelings and energy intake.”
  • Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition – Maltodextrin is a carbohydrate making psyllium husk easy to digest. According to the journal, maltodextrin is “preferred to that of common sugars and their use as fat replacers leads to a reduction in the energy density (kJ/g) of food products.”

When Did Metamucil Start?

Psyllium husk, recognized for centuries as a valuable source of fiber, found its way into the consumer market through Metamucil in 1934. The official name for both the psyllium husk and powder became Metamucil, a term derived from the Greek word for change (meta) and the type of fiber it incorporates (mucilage). Initially, Metamucil had limited availability, mainly as a “behind the counter” brand in drugstores.

In 1974, Metamucil made its debut as a consumer product, initially promoted for its laxative properties. Over time, the brand expanded its product offerings, and today, Metamucil is available in various forms, including powder, wafers, and capsules. The active ingredient in Metamucil is psyllium seed husks.

Manufactured in Phoenix, Arizona, by Procter & Gamble, Metamucil has evolved from its early drugstore presence to a more widely accessible dietary supplement aimed at supporting digestive health. These historical details provide a backdrop to the product’s journey, underscoring its enduring relevance.

There are also different versions of Metamucil, including:

  • Premium Blend Sugar-Free Powder
  • Fiber Gummies
  • Psyllium Fiber Capsules
  • Fiber Thins
  • Sugar-Free Smooth Powder
  • Real Sugar Coarse Powder
  • 14-Day Citrus Cleanse

Procter & Gamble, a multinational consumer goods company headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio, produces a range of well-known products, including Ariel, Tide, Bounce, Downy, Pampers, Bounty, Charmin, Always, Gillette, Venus, Head & Shoulders, Vicks, Olay, Crest, and Oral-B.

As an accredited business with the Better Business Bureau (BBB), Procter & Gamble maintains an “A+” BBB rating. Based on an average of 41 customer reviews, they have received a rating of 1.41 out of 5 stars. Over the past 3 years, the company has successfully resolved 306 complaints, with an additional 137 complaints closed in the last 12 months.

Claims

Metamucil Claims

metamucil claims

As a product mainly designed to improve overall metabolism, help with weight loss, and digestive benefits that only a few other products offer, Metamucil is the most popular of its kind.

Using psyllium husk, this product claims to provide the perfect way to maintain healthy body composition by reducing the fat intake and improving digestive processes, working simply as a laxative.
Metamucil also works to:

  • Decrease weight
  • Burn fat
  • Avoid constipation
  • Aid with other digestive problems such as diarrhea and vomiting

All of this is a result of the amount of fiber Metamucil offers.

Ingredients

Metamucil Ingredients

metamucil ingredients

As we’ve said before, Metamucil is mainly psyllium husk. This ingredient is practically 90% of the whole formula. However, there are other important Metamucil ingredients, such as:

  • Maltodextrin
  • Aspartame
  • Sodium
  • Calcium
  • Potassium
  • Phenylalanine

These ingredients are considered inactive, so they don’t offer much of an effect.

Aspartame, a sweetener, works within Metamucil to help taste the product, as it is one of the most potent sweeteners.

According to the journal Food and Chemical Toxicology, aspartame has been used “safely in food for more than 30 years.”

The real work of Metamucil is thanks to psyllium, of course. It has been linked to many benefits, such as:

  • Bodyweight reduction
  • Satiety
Benefits

Metamucil Benefits

metamucil Benefits

Due to its highly beneficial ingredients, Metamucil is responsible for:

  • Increased fiber intake
  • Helps to lose fat
  • Aids at weight loss
  • Suppresses appetite
  • Improves metabolism
  • Avoids constipation
  • Improves the digestive system

According to the journal Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics, “Mixed fibre and psyllium were equally efficacious in improving constipation…and relieving flatulence and bloating.” Plus, the British Journal of Nutrition found that psyllium husk could help reduce blood pressure.

Dietary fiber in general can be beneficial as well. According to the International Journal of Molecular Sciencesdietary fiber may play a beneficial role in inflammation of the bowels, while research in Nutrition Today found that these kind of fiber supplements can help gastrointestinal health.

Finally, fiber can drive metabolic health benefits as well, per the Journal of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners

Side Effects

Metamucil Side Effects

As a product that is used globally, Metamucil isn’t known to produce many side effects.

However, some Metamucil reviews have mentioned mild to moderate effects from using the product. These effects include:

  • Flatulence
  • Stomach Pain
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Cramping
  • Constipation
  • Allergic Reactions

Because of this, it is essential to talk to a doctor before taking Metamucil, especially if you suffer from any medical conditions.

Does Metamucil Work?

Despite a clear positive amount of Metamucil directions, there’s still a lot to say about its effectiveness and overall benefits.

As you know, Metamucil in all forms is claimed to offer many positive results. However, these benefits are not that clear most of the time, according to many consumer reviews.

So, yes, the product will most likely display results, but the effects are not magical. The product will improve a user’s diet and increase fiber consumption, which comes with many benefits.

Metamucil and Weight Loss

metamucil weight loss

Metamucil capsules and powder have been studied as a possible weight-loss supplement for decades.

It has been accepted as an effective treatment for obesity conditions, thanks to its effect on body composition, weight, and overall fat depositories in the body.

The Metamucil weight loss effects are due to how psyllium works in the digestive system, relieving any obstruction and provoking an instant release of liquids that cleanse the bowels and digest everything a lot easier.

Psyllium husk is known as an influential factor in the loss of body mass, especially when taken 30 minutes before each meal, which helps to improve the overall digestive system to absorb what matters and dismiss what’s not.

According to the journal PLoS One, “Dietary supplementation with 6 g/day of psyllium over 6 weeks improves fat distribution and lipid profile.”

Reddit Reviews

Metamucil Reddit Reviews

Many consumers trust Reddit for information about supplements, pre-workouts, and meal replacements. With more than 130,000 active communities, there’s something for everyone on the platform. We decided to research Metamucil Reddit reviews to see what we could learn.

The reviews suggest that while it has been well received, some users didn’t like the product. In this case, users brought up concerns about whether the pill was as effective as the powdered drink mix at easing digestive issues.

What Users Are Saying

What Users Are Saying

“Its the best for keeping things moving along.”

“I don’t like it I feel the regular Metamucil work better for me but maybe work for other type of body.”

“My doctor recommended these and said take 2 a day. After 1 week it changed nothing, and I noticed on the bottle it says 1 serving is 5 capsules, and states you may have to take 5 capsules up to 4x to 5x per day! That’s a LOT of capsules and you could finish the bottle in 2 weeks if you take the maximum Metamucil allows/recommends. Anyway I then took 3 capsules/day for a week and nothing. Went up to 4/day, 5/day nothing. Now I am at 6 capsules/day to see if it makes a difference, but that’s just too many to take, and I fear I would have to take 2-3 “servings” or 10-15 capsules per day or more to see a difference. So I cannot recommend this product especially after seeing no change for a few weeks with the recommended serving of 5/day. Also I cannot drink all that water to get so many capsules down. It is difficult and not at all practical to put it simply.”

Bottom Line

The Bottom Line on Metamucil

Well now, are we raving over this fiber supplement? Well, we like Metamucil’s longevity as a product and we found positive comments, but we are hesitant to suggest you pick up a bottle or canister. The science is there, clinical research shows it can help decrease hunger and improve regularity, but this brand is no better than a generic version at your local superstore. Plus, it’s always a good idea to increase your fiber intake with foods rather than supplements.

If you’d like to shed more pounds of fat, we suggest you go with a program that contains clinically-tested ingredients and offers plenty of bang for your buck.

Among the best products we’ve seen this year is one called Noom. An extensive food database, personalized meal plans, human coaching, food and exercise tracking and more come with the weight-loss app.

Also, the makers of Noom are so confident in their product they’re offering a free trial offer, which is a good sign.

Could be your body detoxing with all the good soluble fibre. Could also be the aspartame. Try drinking a litre of diet coke and see if it smells the same. I’ve been using Metamucil to good effect but the aspartame worries me a little. There is a Metamucil Natural or something with some sugar and a little aspartame lol but prob less aspartame. However that one is “granular” I think it’s called and some people find it hard to drink as in gag reflex. Saw a bag of psyllium for $7.50 in the supermarket today so maybe I’ll try making up my own mix. Recommend Metamucil wholeheartedly to anyone though. Give it a try.

Metamucil improved my bowel movements. I am 55, so at an age where this is a concern. Started having unfirm, messy bowel movements for 3 months, to extreme diarhea for 2 weeks, to constipation. Wanted to get back to as much of normalcy as I could. The really cute Metamucil commercials with Suzi Barrett motivated me to try it. I did, & my bowel movements kicked back in, firmer albeit soft stool. I switched to the Equate brand for now, 1/2 price of the Metamucil, & cost is a major issue for me right now. Much improved on the bowel issue.

You aren’t adding enough water. One tablespoon per day with one very large glass (think a large soda size from MCDs). Stir quickly. Drink quickly. Letting it sit will make it gel. The extra fiber and all the water will make you not hungry for a few hours. But really the extra fiber will help lower cholesterol if you need that also.

I love the new Pink Lemonade Metamucil. From what I have read with South Beach is that metamucil does not speed up the fat metabolism…but it simply prevents you from dumping too much fat and sugar into your system/blood stream at such a fast pace. Thus, it helps in decreasing the insulin flucuation that ultimately leads to stored fat.
