Pantothenic Acid is more commonly referred to as Vitamin B5. This B vitamin is water soluble so fat intake is not required when taking Pantothenic acid for the vitamin to be absorbed. In order for the body to metabolize carbohydrates, fats and proteins from food, there must be a source of Pantothenic acid. Most foods contain at least some Pantothenic acid with foods like avocados and broccoli being higher in the acid than other foods. Pantothenic acid has been the subject of various research studies including one on rheumatoid arthritis where patients showed significant reduction in stiffness when taking Vitamin B5.

There are recommended daily requirements for Pantothenic acid starting at birth. Infants between the ages of 0 and 6 months should intake 1.7 mg per day. Between 7 and 12 months that recommendation changes to 1.8 mg. Children from 1 to 3 years should intake 2 mg and those ages 4 to 8 should intake 3 mg. Between 9 and 13 the recommended intake is upped to 4 mg and from 14 years and up adults should consume at least 5 mg of Pantothenic acid. Pregnant and breastfeeding women must also intake higher amounts of Vitamin B5 with pregnant women aiming for 6 mg and breastfeeding women 7 mg.
Most of the Pantothenic acid consumed as food starts out as coenzyme A or acyl carrier protein. There are several processes that take place to transform these elements to the free Pantothenic acid used by the body. When there is a huge increase in Pantothenic acid, the body cannot process it all and absorption is reduced by 10%.
There has been one notable study involving Pantothenic acid. In 1997, 100 participants were given a 1000 calorie per day diet. Some were supplemented with Pantothenic acid and others were not. The participants who received Vitamin B5 at 10 mg per day lost more weight and felt fewer hunger pains. This study has not been repeated or reinforced with another positive study.

Nearly every B vitamin complex and some multivitamins contain vitamin B5, or Pantothenic acid. There is no shortage of the vitamin in natural foods eaten every day, either. Deficiency is not common and toxicity is not possible. At very high amounts, B5 may cause a bit of stomach discomfort but that is the only reaction a person should have. Taking more Pantothenic acid will not increase the effects on the body.
