Shape Ups are comfort and training shoes developed by Sketchers. They claim to help the wearer tone up and lose weight just by wearing the shoe during a regular work or school day. The shoe’s motto is “Shape up while you walk.” The Sketchers company has attempted to create a shoe that could be worn throughout the day to increase energy and muscle tone in the lower part of the body without injury, pain or strain on the muscle. The result was the Shape Ups design.

List of Ingredients

Specialty shoe designed by Sketchers.

Product Features

Shape Ups are created with soft, arched soles that simulate sand walking. When weight is applied to the sole during a normal step, it sinks while maintaining just enough curve to force the foot to roll. According to the Sketchers literature on Shape Ups, this movement works to improve muscle tone in the buttocks, lower leg, calves, thighs and abdominals.

Consumers wishing to learn more about Shape Ups can view demonstration videos and commercials on the Sketchers website. There is also a Team Shape Up where users can join others who wear the Shape Up shoes for working out or simply walking. In order to meet the needs of the consumer, there are various different styles of Shape Up. When the shoe was first introduced, the athletic look was only offered by Sketchers. Today, there are versions that look like athletic shoes, casual shoes and hiking shoes. Shape Ups are available for both men and women.

Sketchers offers clinical study information on the benefits and effects of wearing Shape Ups, but there are no links to the official study published online. Be that as it may, the results of the study include increased weight loss, muscle tone and decreased body fat. Trials participants were followed for six weeks.

Sketchers official website offers the Shape Ups shoes for sale directly or through various offline retailers. The shoe is priced starting at $110 a pair. If the shoes are unworn, they can be returned within 45 days for a full refund.

Advantages

  • Sketchers sells Shape Ups online and offline.
  • Shoes are backed with a 45 day money back guarantee.

Disadvantages

  • Shape Ups are much more costly than other fitness shoes.
  • Some consumers may not like the look of the shoe for everyday use.
  • There are no links to official research studies online.
  • If you currently lead a sedentary lifestyle that does not involve walking, Shape Ups will not benefit you very much.

Conclusion

Shape Ups may be a good addition to a workout routine to increase weight loss and fat loss. The Sketchers Shape Ups, however, cannot be worn in every life situation. People who are required to dress professionally at work may not have the time to use the Shape Ups enough to see a benefit and that narrows down the potential customer pool dramatically. There is also the cost of the shoe which is far greater than comparable fitness shoes.

Okay so I’ve had the Skechers shape ups for about 5 months I wear them almost every day for sometimes up to 6 hours a day. Recently I’ve noticed the souls of my feet the back of my knee and also my spine and upper back have been hurting. Has this happened to any only else? And it’s not cause I’m old either I’m 16.

My fiance got a Shapeups from Sketchers sneakers from the Sketchers store and after using them for like 2 weeks he developed a back problem that makes pain shoot down to his foot, he’s had it for months and some times he screams of the pain. I really wish he would’ve never used them. We are so frustrated. he goes to a chiropractor now, he has gone to the ER twice and they didn’t do anything but prescribing pills. he’s about to lose his job because of the pain and the sketchers brand new. So I know that it has helped some people but my fiance got the worst end of using these.

Ho boy, I have the pain in the back of the knee especially, and both knees. I was told the shoes force me to walk with the heel first, instead of other shoes that make me pull with my toes first. I loved my shoes for a year. Wore sandals all summer, then started at the gym and in just two weeks my knees are crippling me. Will stop wearing them immediately.

I bought my Shape-ups one year ago, in Jan 2012. Since then I have been wearing them almost every day, all the day long. I’m 56 y/o, quite normal, neither sporty nor sedentary. I can only say good words about Shape-ups, I have not experienced any counter effect. I’m really sorry about all the ones being injured by these shoes.
    Only two points:
    - how can it happen that, just two years ago, people went crazy for them and were praising benefits, while now they all give their “thumb down”?
    - cautiun should be exerted (I know it’s unpopular to say so) in order to verify that the reported accidents are really due to the shoes and not to other silent causes that incidentally popped-up during the shoe-wearing period.

I have worn Sketchers Shape ups for over a year now. About 2 or 3 months ago my left hip popped and sent severe pain down my leg. It felt better after a couple of days, but since then this same thing happens often. The pain seems to get worse every time it happens and I have problems walking because of the pain. At first I didn’t relate it to the shoes, but now when reading these comments I think it might be my shoes. I love them they are the most comfortable shoes I own and I work in them every day. I have 2 pairs of them. I seem to have more problems when I wear the newer pair then when I wear the pair that I have had for over a year. If any one knows if you can be reimbursed for the shoes or who to contact about these problems I would appreciate any advise. Thanks

I walk an hour every other
    day in my Skecher Shape-ups.
    I have developed pain below
my right knee cap and my left
    knee sometimes feels unstable
    like the side ligaments are
giving way. I have had these
    shoes for about 6 months.

I’m not praising or knocking these shoes seeing as I’ve only had them for a week now. I have never been a very active person and when I would have to run for any reason or walk for long periods of time or over rough ground I would get the worst pain in my knees which a doctor later diagnosed with calcium deposits on my knees that would flair up from the extended pressure. On top of that I’ve always had back pain, mostly lower. Reading the comments people complain about these getting worse or appearing I have yet to see any of these symptoms. Because of the spring like sole to these shoes you can’t walk the way you normally do that’s what is supposed to help train your muscles I’m pretty sure people thinking this is just a quick fix and walking normally in these shoes is what’s causing the problem. Pay attention to the way you walk in these shoes and balance in them when you walk and you might be able to avoid these issues.

I wish I would’ve seen this web-site before I stent the money on my Skechers. Like so many others, I loved them in the beginning but I’ve been off work for the last 2 weeks because of severe lower back pain.I think if you are more prone to bone problems you just shouldn’t wear these shoes. Does anyone out there know how long the pain lasts?

I started wearing them in December of 2010. They felt great like I was walking on air. I started having problems with my right hip and my lower back. My doctor put me on Tylenol Three w/codeinene. This did not help. I am Scheduled for an MRI in October and I now have pain in both hips, legs and lower back. I have been unable to sleep on either hip. My Doctor put me on sleeping pills. I take oxycontin for pain and I wake up in pain everytime I roll over. I can hardly get up from a sitting position, stairs are a real problem. Sitting causes pain, standing causes pain. I can’t bend down without pain. Riding in a vehcle with the normal small issue in road conditions, puts me in agony.
I never even considered that the p[ain I experience could be from the shoes. Just on the off chance that might have been part of the reason for my pain I googled this site. I was supprised to see how many people out there are having the same problems I am experiencing and have had severe long lasting issues because of the shoes. Is anyone out there experiencing real long term effects from wearing these shoes? I have been wearing them approxiamately 6 months and I am almost crippled with the pain.

I have a herniated disc pressing on my sciatica.Have the Doctor get you an MRI ad talk to a neurologist about epidural injection if possible.I had it done and pain is gone!!

I’ve now been wearing shape-ups for 2 years. I’m on my feet more than 12 hours a day and had back and foot pain continuously. Since I started wearing sketcher shape-ups I’ve had no more back or foot problems. They may not work for weight loss but they certainly have helped my back and feet. So critisize if you must but I can’t wear anything else to work!!

I never had hip problems in my life until I bought these shoes. I followed the instructions on wearing them and developed bursitis in both hips. I have been getting injections now for 3 months to try and stop the pain. I wish I had done some investigating before I bought them.

I followed the instructions and only wore them around the house and to and from Dr appointments. I developed bursitis in both of my hips and have had several injections. Now I have to be careful how I move my legs when getting up or sitting down. They are very comfortable on my feet but not worth the pain else where.

Seriously, I am a tenured professor of marketing and stand approximately 20 hours a week during lecturing and I love my SHAPE UPS. I have worn them approximately one year…consistently (throughout Europe for 4 weeks on a study abroad with 29 California college students) along with MBT’s. Since that time my heart rate has lowered, my need for prescription orthotics were no longer needed, my posture improved, and my stamina walking and climbing. I love them and hope that the need to sue or blame a product that helps so many will not be forced in the United States to be taken of the market…If so, I will go to Europe and purchase MBT’s or SKETCHERS…as it appears people in the EU are not complaining about there usage.

I’m going on my fifth acupuncture treatment next week and now thinking I won’t have to go thru anymore epidural injections…….thank you for this website!!

It got so bad I had to stop walking on the treadmill. Went to the Dr.for siatic treatment.. stopped wearing shapeups..got a good pair of New Balance..and doing Yoga again to strengthen my back, legs and knees. After a month of work I’m back on the treadmill again..I wear a knee brace when I’m exercising for support but pleased with progress . Don’t waste ur money on shapeups..not worth it.

I purchased Sketcher’s Tone-Up’s and wore them as recommended for 2 months. They were the most comfortable shoes I have ever worn. However, I began to experience severe lower back pain which became progressively worse each time I wore them, and then it just hurt all the time. I am a physically active person who has never experienced any type of back pain. I’m going to the doctor to see what type of lower back injury I now have . . . sitting, standing it’s extremely painful. I purchased the shoes at a Sketchers store and was able to exchange them due to their 90 day exchange policy. I don’t recommend these shoes . . . based on the number of negative reviews for all types of Shape-Up and Tone-Up shoes vs. the positive . . . spend your money on a good pair of running/tennis shoes. I hope that my doctor is able to recommend some type of treatment or exercise to correct this problem and relieve the pain , , , because right now, it’s barely tolerable.

I’ve never had low back pain either, until about a month after wearing these sneakers. At first I thought that I had pulled my back muscles at work while lifting a patient, but now I can directly associate my increasing pain to my Shape Ups because it’s the most intense the day after I walk on my treadmill while wearing them. I’m also starting to have pain running down my right leg. I have never experienced any of these problems before. I’m not going to wear them for a while and then I’ll know for sure. Hopefully these pains are permanent!!

Has anyone checked out the lawsuit the woman filed in Ohio? I believe her completely. Like her I am a waitress and was so excited when i received a pair of Sketcher Shapeups for Christmas. I wore them for 2 weeks and they seemed very comfortable on my feet, however I began having pain in my knees. I have NEVER had any problems with my knees prior to wearing these shoes. I returned them after a couple weeks and here we are in February, I am still experiencing knee pain every day. I consider myself a very active person, however my knee pain has absolutely held me back from many activities that I enjoy. These stupid shoes should come with a warning on the box. I am going to the doctor this week. I wouldn’t give these shoes to my worst enemy!

I bought them in a very good shoe store and they told me to wear them for 1/2 hr. each day for the first week and then add 15mins. a day. Never did I have any problems. I didn’t buy them to lose weight I bought them for comfort and wear them all the time NO hip or back problems from them. I have tried on other brand in the beginning and they truly hurt my feet.

So far I only walked on my Shape-Ups at home since they tell you to get used to them gradually. I had no pain and was hoping to see some great results of weight lose and toning with further and longer use. Suddenly I started having a very bad pain in my right hip. I cannot sleep on my side. And no matter what shoe I wear I have a lot of pain. The shoes were very comfortable so I did not make the connection between wearing the Shape-Ups and the pain. Does anyone know if you can recover? Is it permanent? Did anyone contact the company for a comment on these problems?

It started a few weeks after wearing the shoes at least 4 days per week.It took me a while to figure out it was the shoes. they put too much pressure on the “arch” of the foot. I think it may have damaged some nerves in the sole of my foot. Anyone else out therehaving tingling or numbness???????

    [Reply]

    Dana

It seems to take months, but it does get better. I also hope the damage isn’t permanent, because there is still lingering pain initially standing up, going up stairs and even keeps me awake at night some. Actually glad to know that others are experiencing the same thing, so I know it’s the shoes.

I too purchased the Shape-Ups and am experiencing pain in my right leg up to my hip. I cannot lay on either side. I am going to the chiropractor and also went to see a vascular doctor thinking it might be poor circulation ,etc. I liked wearing the shoes and they were comfortable, but good grief, this pain has been endless. Has anyone recovered?

I have severe bilateral knee pain. Started approximately 3 weeks after wearing the shape-ups. My gait is unstable. Because I have to use my calves to walk up-right, my calves are killing me – as well as my back. I can’t stand for very long before having to sit down.

I also purchased my pair about 2 months ago and like many of you I am having pain in my knee and thigh area. At first I thought it was muscle building pain but I am noticing swelling at the knees on the side. I had a doctor look at it and he told me to stop wearing them and see if there is a difference. It was!

I too purchased two pair of the tone-up sandals at the start of summer. This sandal has been my sandal of choice over the course of the past 7 months combining comfort, flexibility, toning and style. I have enjoyed wearing them however lately Ive experienced sharp radiating pain through out my left calf, hamstring, buttocks and lower back. I am a very active person and consider myself a person who is very tolerant of most pain. The pain that i am experiencing now is unbearable! Has anyone had any feedback from Skechers?

i bought my shapeups purely for the reason of having that thicker cusion on the soles to give comfort to my heel spurs !!! i had been in severe pain for over a year and figured i would give them a try. it felt wonderfull for about 6 months ….NOOOO PAIN !!! I WAS SOOO HAPPY AAAAAAAHHHH RELIEF !! BUT just when i thought i cured the heel spur pain…..i had an entirly new pain that developed on the back of my heels because of that DANG “ROCKER HEEL” THERE’S NO CUSION RIGHT THERE !! I SOOOO WISH they would make another version without the rocker and just bring the heel straight down. i know i cant be the only one with this problem !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Penny, my sister healed her heel spurs by rubbing Vics Vapo rub on them everyday and night for about 2 months. She would cover them with a sock so it didn’t rub off on the sheets. I hope it works for you.

I’ve had my shapeups about 3 weeks. I liked so much, I bought 2 pair of Mary Jane style too (black & brown). The last few days my knees are hurting and I have a shooting pain in my heel when I bend down to take my shoes off or touch my toes. My feet tend to roll inward when I am walking too. I love my shapeups, but may have to stop wearing.

I have been wearing Shape-up for about 4 months. I am a preschool teacher and am on my feet a lot. My heels are now killing me, I am sure it is the shoe. This is very disappointing because I think they really helped me with my posture. I am not sure I have enough arch support.

My wife broke her femur while simply walking in ShapeUps. They shpould not be aggressively marketed to everyone, particularly anyone over 65 or who has arthritis or knee or hip problems. They are too high, and have no lateral support, She just turned around while walking and fell on her hip. Thinking about joining a class action. Anyone in this forum interested?

I would like information on filing a law suit personally, or joining in a class action as Stuart has suggested. I have scoliosis and in the past year have bought two pairs of Sketcher Shape- ups, and at the time of purchase was assured by the sales lady at Foot Locker that they were excellent shoes for people with back pain. Guess I should have came to this web site before shelling out 200 dollars. Please anyone with law suit info let me know, I would like my money back and then some, these shoes have made me feel like I was kicked in the rear end with steel toed boots, tell everyone you know do not buy these shoes. For the record I bought mine long before Kim Kardashian endorced them.

Same here. Been wearing these for 14 months and have pain in right hip on outside of leg into the knee. It is worse climbing stairs and getting up from sitting. Had an exray to rule out other issues, have not received results. Did you change your sneakers for a different type, yet? I waitress and love these shape-ups. I am 59 years old, so it could be arthritis or bone loss.

I have also just gone to the doctor for hip pain on my left side/leg. I noticed pain coming on gradually until it was so painful a couple of days ago I couldn’t bear weight on my left leg, and it also hurts to sleep on my side. I had severe pain in my right hip, then my left as well. My MRI revealed I had to have imediate surgery to put screws in each femoral neck. I fractured both of them wearing skechers shape-ups. This ‘hip pain’ many of you are complaining of should not to be taken lightly.

If you fracture your legs walking around in shoes you have much bigger problems. Your bones are weak and you should be doing resistance training and strengthening them, the shoe places different loads on your ankles and knees you are not used to. Just like any other form of training, work up to it and expect a little discomfort. If any of you decided to start running 2 hours a day, you would all be be crying how much pain you are in and how bad running is and you must find somebody to sue, now! Either expect some discomfort during a new form of exercise or sit back down on your sofa, grab the remote and a big bag of potato chips. That won’t hurt now will it?

I am on my fourth pair of these shoes. I’ve been wearing them for almost four years now. They are by far the best shoes I have ever worn. I wear them almost all the time. They will make your legs sore when you first start wearing them because they do improve muscle tone and put your joints into the proper position. Many of you probably have underlying joint problems from years of bad shoes. Keep trying build up slowly on the time. These shoes also put your spine into a properly aligned neutral position. Lower back pain? GONE! Just remember sometimes something good for you will cause some pain until you get used to it. Expect some discomfort at the beginning Hope this helps some of you.
