The Holford Diet is a fat-burning diet focused on evaluating your Glycemic Load, or GL, and eating the right foods. It was developed by Patrick Holford.
Holford, a British nutritionist, began researching the affect of nutrition on mental health as a psychology student at the University of York. He began using nutritional medicine to treat mental health patients in 1980. He founded ION, the Institute for Optimum Nutrition, is 1984. In 1986, Holford began researching the way intelligence is affected by nutrition. He has also founded the 100% Health Club, whose goal is to help each member reach 100% health. He continues to present lectures and workshops on nutrition throughout the UK.

The Holford Diet can easily be compared to a typical diabetic diet plan, as it focuses on maintaining healthy, consistent blood sugar levels. The book The Holford Low-GL Diet explains the concept of low GL and details such as why Omega-3s are healthy and why hidden allergies can affect your ability to lose weight. It also gives guidelines for what foods you should eat and what combinations you should eat them in. As is typical of most diets, it emphasizes eating a good breakfast and drinking enough water.
The gylcemic load concept suggests that measuring only glycemic index, the sugars in foods, is not sufficient. Glycemic load also takes into account the carbohydrates in a food, including quantity and quality. This allows for a better determination of how your diet affects your blood sugar.
