The Holford Diet is a fat-burning diet focused on evaluating your Glycemic Load, or GL, and eating the right foods. It was developed by Patrick Holford.

Holford, a British nutritionist, began researching the affect of nutrition on mental health as a psychology student at the University of York. He began using nutritional medicine to treat mental health patients in 1980. He founded ION, the Institute for Optimum Nutrition, is 1984. In 1986, Holford began researching the way intelligence is affected by nutrition. He has also founded the 100% Health Club, whose goal is to help each member reach 100% health. He continues to present lectures and workshops on nutrition throughout the UK.

Product Features

The Holford Diet can easily be compared to a typical diabetic diet plan, as it focuses on maintaining healthy, consistent blood sugar levels. The book The Holford Low-GL Diet explains the concept of low GL and details such as why Omega-3s are healthy and why hidden allergies can affect your ability to lose weight. It also gives guidelines for what foods you should eat and what combinations you should eat them in. As is typical of most diets, it emphasizes eating a good breakfast and drinking enough water.

The gylcemic load concept suggests that measuring only glycemic index, the sugars in foods, is not sufficient. Glycemic load also takes into account the carbohydrates in a food, including quantity and quality. This allows for a better determination of how your diet affects your blood sugar.

Advantages

  • Recommends exercise, but mainly as an appetite suppressant, which does not work for everyone.
  • Scientific research backing.
  • Workable diet for diabetics and others with blood-sugar difficulties.
  • Book can be purchased for a reasonable price.

Disadvantages

  • Is not specifically geared toward weight loss.
  • Has a lack of before/after photos.
  • Has no money-back guarantee.
  • Has no free gift with purchase.
  • Is a complicated diet, not a simple idea to fit into a busy lifestyle.
  • Book is long and not well organized.
  • Long-term effects are unknown.
  • Holford’s idea that most mental illnesses are treatable through nutrition may cause unnecessary problems for people who follow his plan without consulting a doctor and thus do not get proper medical treatment.

Conclusion

The Holford Diet is similar to other diets, just giving a little more explanation behind concepts already well-known, such as keeping your blood-sugar levels balanced and eating the right fats and proteins. It’s main difference from most other diets is that it measures glycemic load, not just glycemic index. Otherwise, it doesn’t stand out as a strongly new idea. It does not address the use of herbal weight loss supplements.
