In developing the Zone Diet plan, Dr. Barry Sears sought to teach people what to eat, not how much to eat. His goal was to balance the body’s hormonal responses, insulin in particular, through proper eating–in other words, to allow people’s bodies to find “the zone.” The zone is your body at its ideal, stabilized state, free of hormonal swings and changes.

The Zone, unlike many other diets, doesn’t operate off of deprivation but rather balance. Sears requires dieters eat three meals and two snacks a day. This regularity of food helps insulin stay stable. Meals and snacks are scheduled out. In fact, Sears recommends that dieters eat at specific times whether they feel hungry or not. Lack of hunger means their insulin is stable and they’re “in the zone.” Meals should consist of about one third protein (about three to four ounces) and two thirds carbohydrates. These carbohydrates should be weighted heavily towards fruit and vegetables and away from refined grains. Also, each meal should include good fats such as olive oil. Snacks should have a similar ratio of carbohydrates to protein, with about one ounce of protein. Dieters should drink sixty-four ounces of water a day.

Many dieters enjoy The Zone due to its balanced and guilt-free approach. Those on The Zone often feel less deprived than those on other diets. Unlike many diets, no major food group is eliminated. However, despite these positives, those interested should still do their research. The Zone does have its drawbacks, including too high an emphasis on eating and too low an emphasis on exercise.

Advantages

  • The Zone Diet focuses on balance not deprivation.
  • The creator of this diet, Barry Sears, is a doctor.

Disadvantages

  • The Zone Diet may place too much of an emphasis on eating and not enough on exercise.
  • Dieters don’t watch caloric intake only what type of food they eat.
  • Eating on this diet may cost more in groceries than what some people currently spend.

Conclusion

In a dieting world focused on deprivation, abuse, and unbalanced nutrition, a diet plan like The Zone diet comes as a refreshment. Many dieters will feel ready to give the plan their wholehearted allegiance. However, as with any diet plan, no one should start it without first doing their research. Certain aspects of The Zone may not work for your particular needs or health. Consult your doctor first.

You can just about eat anything on the zone, you just have to watch your portions, and some foods are more favourable than others.
