Creatine is the most sought after supplement in bodybuilding. There are few bodybuilders that do not take creatine at some point in the bulking phase. Creatine is proven to super-hydrate the muscle. That is to say it forces the muscle to retain water. This water retention leads to the soft or swollen look many bodybuilders have during the off-season. Universal Nutrition Lava claims to be a superior form of creatine, though the ingredient list shows creatine monohydrate, the same ingredient used in other creatine supplements. Unlike other creatine products, Universal Nutrition Lava includes a carbohydrate and protein complex, creating a complete workout shake powder.

List of Ingredients

Ultra and Micro-Filtrated Whey Protein Concentrate (Containing Peptide-Rich Whey Lactoglobulins, Lactalbumin, Immunoglobulins and Lactoferrin), GlycoCarb Complex (Dextrose and Glucose Polymers), Maltodextrin, 100% Pure Creatine Monohydrate, Glutamine, Taurine, Magnesium Oxide, Disodium Phosphate, Potassium Phosphate, Fruit Flavor, Lecithin, Ascorbic Acid, Vitamin E Succinate, Niacin, Citric Acid, Aspartame, Carmine (for color) and Chromium (GTF).

Product Features

Universal Nutrition Lava contains all the ingredient the bodybuilder needs to flood the muscle with hydration, decrease recovery time and promote lean muscle mass. The formula contains protein, creatine and carbohydrates – the three main ingredients for muscle growth. Hydration is crucial for muscle growth. Carbohydrates work as a transport system for protein and protein is the food the muscle needs to grow.

The science behind muscle growth is simple. When a bodybuilder lifts weights, small tears appear in the muscle fibers. When these tears heal, the “scars” are new muscle and thus the muscle grows larger. New muscle fiber growth is limited by lactic acid and lack of energy or food, thus protein shakes like Universal Nutrition Lava combine ingredients to reduce the effect of lactic acid, prevent the break down of muscle fibers and facilitate growth and healing.

While the formula for Universal Nutrition Lava is complete, it can only be used during the building or bulking phase of bodybuilding. Creatine causes water retention, which is why bodybuilders look swollen in the off-season. During the cutting phase, bodybuilders must stop taking creatine to prevent additional water retention and start taking diuretics to force out all that extra water.

Advantages

  • Contains all the ingredients the bodybuilder needs to grow muscle and recover faster.
  • May decrease healing time between workouts.

Disadvantages

  • Not designed for bodybuilders in the cutting phase.
  • Not designed for weight loss.
  • Will not improve metabolism.
  • Will cause weight gain.
  • May cause an electrolyte imbalance in the muscle.

Conclusion

Universal Nutrition Lava has a strong place in bodybuilding, but only during the bulking phase. Bodybuilders use creatine, carbohydrates and protein to promote muscle growth and when those ingredients are combined into one supplement, all the better. This does limit the time the bodybuilder can use the supplement before competition, but chances are they will use up one canister before hitting the cutting phase. Dieters will not find any benefit from creatine or Universal Nutrition Lava.
