Xtend Barre: Lean & Chiseled is a dance / ballet workout. The DVD was released in 2011 and runs for 60 minutes. The listing on Amazon.com includes a brief video to give the dieter a taste of the instructor and moves used to chisel the body. The brief video is enough for us to see this workout is going to be very difficult for dieters with joint pain. Overweight dieters or those new to fitness workout DVDs may also have a difficult time completing the workout. The DVD sells for less than $14 and earns good reviews, but these reviews are from people looking for an intense ballet workout.

Xtend Barre: Lean & Chiseled is broken into five segments: warm-up, upper body, barre, core and cool-down. The majority of the workout, nearly 24 minutes, is spent in the barre or ballet section. The follower needs to use a chair for balance throughout the barre. Upper body and core exercise are also based on classic ballet moves. A dieter not versed in ballet terminology may find the program difficult to follow. The instructor calls ballet moves by name during the workout sequence.

The warm-up is completed from a standing position, but cool-down takes place on the floor. Dieters that have trouble getting down on the floor and back again may have to cool-down from a standing position. Xtend Barre: Lean & Chiseled is marketed toward a small sector of the fitness and dieting population, but the reviews are generally good. Only one negative review exists on Amazon.com and that dieter complained of being sore after the workout, which is a common body reaction to any workout program.

Xtend Barre: Lean & Chiseled is a ballet workout from start to finish. There are no dieting tips or nutritional information included on the DVD. The claim of chiseling the body means nothing if the dieter does not eat a healthy diet while working out. The workout could be hard enough that the dieter slows down, removing the cardio benefits from the workout. Dieters with joint and muscle ailments should not complete this workout.
