Overview

What is 80 Day Obsession?

80 Day Obsession is a nutrition and fitness plan, helping you “build your butt and shred out your abs” in only 80 days. Unlike other plans, 80 Day Obsession involves 80 new workouts in 80 days. The goal is to help you burn fat, become leaner, strengthen your muscles, flatten your stomach.

80 Day Obsession is exclusively on Beachbody on Demand, in real-time. The fitness trainer coaching and guiding you is Autumn Calabrese, whom you may know as the 21 Day Fix creator. What does the science have to say about exercise?

Who is Autumn Calabrese?

Autumn Calabrese began as a bikini competitor, and she has years of experience as a personal trainer and nutritional advisor. After years of training clients, she has developed a series of powerful fitness programs, including 21 Day Fix and her best selling cookbook Fixate and her new cookbook for children (75 Healthy Lunch Ideas for Kids).

She created 80 Day Obsession as a “targeted nutrition and fitness” program to deliver “amazing” results. This program includes 30-60 minute workouts six days a week for 13 weeks, all of which are streamable. The program also includes a meal plan. The exercises are fast-paced and very intense.

A Little Obsessed: A 5-Day Introduction to 80 Day Obsession

A Little Obsessed is a five-day introduction to the program to get you off to a flying start. It launches on December 20th, and it comprises five 30-minute-long workouts and several moves from the full program. A Little Obsessed teaches you the exercises and gives you a sample of the nutrition plan you’ll be using during 80 Day Obsession.

The show provides you with a bunch of new recipes with which to experiment.

Meal Plan

80 Day Obsession Meal Plan

The 80 Day Obsession meal plan has a step-by-step approach similar to 21 Day Fix. You will eat at specific times each day, which they claim maximizes results. Furthermore, there are pre-workout and post-workout meals to help you get those flatter abs.

Think fruit, vegetables, ample lean sources of protein, healthy fats, minimal, simple carbohydrates (focus on complex carbs), and nutrient-rich foods. You will need to hit up the grocery store, and you’ll definitely need to do some meal prep.

Science Behind Meal Planning

According to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, “higher protein diets may increase total weight loss and increase the percentage of fat loss.”

“In a six-month randomized trial of 60 overweight and obese subjects, fat loss was almost twice as great in subjects receiving a high-protein diet compared with a moderate-protein diet. The benefits of a higher-protein diet have also been demonstrated in longer-term studies.”

Based on research presented in the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity, “home meal preparation has been linked with improved diet quality.”

Portion Control

80 Day Obsession Eating Plan

What is Portion Control?

You are expected to stick to a special eating plan while on 80 Day Obsession. This means calorie calculation, which is based on your fitness goals, weight, and needs.

You can use the fixate cookbook to prepare the meals. Here’s a rundown of the portion-control containers and how they work:

  • Blue Containers: Healthy Fats
  • Orange Containers: Dressing and Seeds
  • Red Containers: Proteins
  • Yellow Containers: Carbohydrates
  • Green Containers: Vegetables
  • Purple Containers: Fruits

The Fixate cookbook tells you exactly when to eat and what containers (food types) you need at that time of the day according to your goals.

Science Behind Portion Control

According to The Journal of Nutrition, portion sizes may take a role in the obesity epidemic.

“Large portion sizes have been thought to be one of the major contributors to excessive calorie intake leading to overweight and obesity in the U.S. Prepackaged meals, such as single-serve frozen entrees, help control portion sizes and reduce weight. A recent study suggests greater weight loss can be achieved with prepackaged meals and lifestyle counseling with a registered dietitian.”

According to the International Journal of Obesity, understanding how much we eat is essential to understanding obesity.

Research shows controlling portions of foods and meals can help you lose weight, transform your body, and improve overall health.

80 Day Obsession Nutrition

Unlike many other Beachbody programs and workouts, 80 Day Obsession emphasizes the importance of a “specifically calibrated Timed Macro-Nutrition Plan.” This is intended to enhance muscle-building and fat loss. The times of the day you’re eating is important for ideal muscle recovery and optimum weight loss results.

Therefore, given the guidelines, you should expect only to eat specific foods (groups) at certain times each day.

Why Is Nutrition Important?

Overall, the types of foods you eat and the number of calories you consume are important if you want to get the results with 80 Day Obsession.

According to JAMA, “While questions remain about long-term effects and mechanisms, a low-carbohydrate, high-protein, high-fat diet may be considered a feasible alternative recommendation for weight loss.”

80 Day Obsession Supplements

Although you don’t have to buy any supplements for 80 Day Obsession, it’s encouraged to use the Beachbody Performance products. Beachbody Performance products include:

  • Energize
  • Recover
  • Recharge
Workout

80 Day Obsession Workout

Exercise is a major part of 80 Day Obsession by Beachbody. There are six types of workouts to “stay off the plateau.” Get ready to devote 45-60 minutes per day, six days a week. You do not need to work out on Sundays. Here are those six types of workouts:

  • Booty
  • Total body
  • AAA
  • Legs
  • Cardio core
  • Cardio flow

This way, you target all major muscle groups, strengthen your body, tighten your core, and shape up that butt. Note that these workouts are fast-paced and intense and may not be for everyone.

Importance of Exercise

Exercise has been clinically proven to improve overall health and wellness, according to CMAJ-JAMC.

One study published in The International Journal of Epidemiology confirmed these facts, stating that, “There is evidence enough to justify the further development of public health policies to promote physical activity.”

80 Day Obsession Equipment

80 Day Obsession equipment needed includes:

  • Beachbody Sliders
  • Loop Resistance Bands
  • Small Dumbells
  • Yoga Fitness Mat

What Users Are Saying

What Users Are Saying

“Best workouts ever. I just finished Round 5. Thank you Autumn.”

“They complicate the moves way too much. I really don’t see how a beginner would be able to focus on form when they are adding ridiculous things that disengage the muscle and require concentration. It’s hard for me to back this.”

“It’s been kickin’ my butt! In a good way. Only on day 3 but I feel fantastic!”

Bottom Line

The Bottom Line on 80 Day Obsession

After all, you mean to completely change your lifestyle for 80 consecutive days. That’s a lot to ask some people. On the downside, there are a few issues we have with 80 Day Obsession, which include:

I”m pretty healthy, workout out 4-5 days a week. Sometime 21 day fix, sometimes gym and sometimes T-25. I find this to be challenging and need to modify sometimes. I think it depends on your fitness level and age. I consider myself pretty fit.

You actually don’t have to buy portion containers, you can use measuring cups. Veggies(green) and Fruit(purple) are both 1 cup; Protein(red) is 3/4 cup; Carbs(yellow) is 1/2 cup; Healthy fats(blue) is 1/3 cup; Seeds and salad dressings(orange), is 2 TB. Also, the timed eating is not difficult at all. You can make it work for just about any lifestyle you have. The only two mini-meals that can’t be moved are the prep and post-workout meals. The others can be eaten at any time as long as they are 2-3 hours apart from each other. I don’t use the Performance line and still have gotten results. I am 15 pounds down and lost 15 inches in 8 weeks!

I absolutely love everything about 80 Day Obsession , the nutrition, the workouts, everything! I have been following the plan since Day 1 and I’m in Phase 2 Day 39. I have lost 10 pounds and lost 12 inches since I began the program! I feel amazing and I notice the results each day. The workouts become progressively more challenging as much as they should be. I am part of a Beachbody group and I have an awesome coach Jennifer Olsen. I incorporated the Beachbody supplements into my daily routine I use hydrate, energize, and I will be incorporating recover into my routine this week. If you’re consistent with your workouts and nutrition the program absolutely works! Consistency is the key Excercising takes only an hour of your day and it’s worth it because as Autumn says “self care” is so important. When you put your health first it changes your life for the better on the inside and out!

Did the first workout today and it is not even close to Advanced or even for someone who has a fitness baseline…if this is how the program will be it will only get results for those new to working out. This is good but not how its pitched. I cant believe she pretended to be out of breath, tired…the others in the video looked like they were dying doing the most basic moves and lots and lots of rest. I try one more workout before I am over it.

The first week is the easiest. It’s a stepping stone like workout program. Each week it builds and gets more intense. Maybe you should start with the 2nd week? Not everyone is on the same level and I’m sure most ppl would need to be eased into lives they are not familiar with. Form is key to not getting injured so taking it slow to ensure proper form is more important especially to ppl who have never performed moves like this.

That would be fine but that’s not what beachbody had led folks to believe . This has the same level ranking as insanity and Shaun t week. It is misleading for sure. You can tell the trainer knows as she always saying how hard it is! Did you try chisel and hammer? 21day extreme? T25? No program has done this.

They have awesome programs for newbies and they are marketing as such. Fitness pro here no a coach speaking the truth. That may apeal to the newbies it’s a great start!

I’ve done Hammer and Chisel, 21dfx, and t25(not a fan) and pretty fit.

Week 1, Phase 1 is definitely just introductory, pretty much that entire week I was debating whether to continue doing it. Week 2 the flow picked up a lot though and I really started to enjoy the workouts more, I also bought way heavier weights for that week and really got my heart rate up, think the workout all depends on pushing yourself to use a weight that you start struggling after more than 10 – 15 reps and to constantly increase weights every week. Once I did that getting really solid calorie burns and strength gains. Phase 2 is even more about strength, and definitely harder, now that it’s on demand you might want to skip to that.

Compared to 21dfx I feel like this is more about large strength gains, even though 21dfx did use weights, that felt more weight loss even though you will still lose weight with 80 day. It’s slightly more difficult than hammer and chisel in phase 2 I think, I also like it more than H&C just because never loved the production quality and couldn’t get over what a bro the guy trainer was.

I wouldn’t say this program is for beginners. Phase one was pretty basic.. Phase 2 is more building and 3 is plyo and burn.
I have been working out for over 10 years and i really liked this program. Lots of variety and things never got boring as the rep/set platform change weekly and entire workout routine change monthly. Ive also done hammer and chisel and 21dfx which i loved! this is nothing compared to insanity, as insanity is more cardio focused this is strength with cardio additives (circuit work with little rest plus 2 days of straight cardio+bodyweight calisthenics)
The timed nutrition is tough however. I am a registered nurse and work 12 hour shifts in the ER and its pretty impossible to get to food every 2-3 hours. Not to mention with ANY workout program if you don’t follow the diet and get it on point you wont see as much progress (diet is everything lets be honest). there is no alcohol allowed and say goodbye to refined carbs and sugars.
6 days a week is pretty tough also depending on what you have going on but it is doable when u get into a routine.
Personally i would do this program again, lots of variety and you never get bored 🙂 the meal plan just doesnt personally work for me.

I agree completely. Every excercise is a stepping stone for the more advanced ones later on because the workouts and transitions become faster as the program progresses each new week.Autumn does stress form and I used lighter weights in the beginning to get the form down. I’ve followed the program from Day 1. I started with A Little Obsessed and now I’m on Day 39 of 80 Day Obesession and had consistent results. I absolutely love it!

This is true. Some of the moves, especially with sliders are even new to those who have been exercising for a while. I am intermediate level, and this is what the program was billed for. It’s modifiable if you think it’s too easy. I just bump up the weight when I need to or double loop. I’ve done Hammer & Chisel as well. That’s another favorite of mine, and I may go back to it when I’m done with 80 DO.
