What is Cellu Slim?

Cellu Slim isn’t a singular product. Rather, it’s a line of skin care products under the Elancyl brand, produced by a French pharmaceutical laboratory called Pierre Fabre.

The products are designed to help reduce the appearance of cellulite, slim the body, and make skin firmer. The products are available as shower gels, creams, and lotions.

According to the Pierre Fabre website, the products are scientifically designed to work with the body’s natural rhythms for decreasing fat cells. Their goal is to create products that “reveal the body’s beauty and radiance.”

How Did Cellu Slim Start?

Pierre Fabre Laboratories got its start in 1951 when a pharmacist named Pierre Fabre purchased a pharmacy in Tarn, France. He began creating his own products, then founded Pierre Fabre Laboratories in 1962.

From there, the company began developing its own brands, including Elancyl, the Cellu Slim brand. Other Pierre Fabre Laboratories brands include:

  • A-Derma
  • Ducray
  • Avene
  • Furterer

Elancyl was launched in 1971 and began with a slimming massage technique. In 1978, they began using caffeine in their products, claiming that it “activates fat removal.” Caffeine is still one of the ingredients in Elancyl products today.

The Elancyl brand also claims to have pioneered scientific methods for making fat removal more effective. They claim to have invented two things: chrono-programmed formulas and lipo-combustion.

Their products containing chrono-programmed formulas are supposed to work with the body’s rhythm to make products more effective. The process for lipo-combustion is a bit more complicated. The company claims that using Sichuan pepper, or xanthoxyline, makes their products “capable of reactivating fat-burning proteins.”

Elancyl Cellu Slim Product Line

There are several products in the Elancyl Cellu Slim product line. Although there are several different products, they all seem to claim to do the same thing—reduce cellulite and decrease fat. Among the many Cellu Slim products available are:

  • Cellu Slim Night
  • Offensive Cellulite
  • Activ Slimming Massage Gel and Glove
  • Cellu Slim Anti-Rebel Cellulite
  • Slim Design
  • Cellu Slim 45+ Cream-Gel
  • Cellu Slim Flat Stomach.

Does Elancyl Make the Cellu Slim Machine?

It’s easy to be confused by the number of products that use “Cellu Slim” as part of their name.

However, the Cellu Slim machine is not a part of the Elancyl product line.

Cellu Slim Claims

The company makes some pretty intense claims about what the Cellu Slim products can do for women’s figures. As the name implies, the chief claim the company makes is that Cellu Slim can help women to get rid of their unsightly cellulite.

They also claim their products:

  • Targeting Fat Cells
  • Use Cecropia and Caffeine to Activate and Eliminate Fat
  • Degrading All Kinds of Fat
  • Fast Results
  • Smoother, Toned, and Elastic Skin
  • Promotes Fluid Drainage

What is Cellulite?

To understand how products that claim to remove cellulite supposedly work, it’s helpful to first know something about cellulite and what causes it.

Cellulite is that lumpy, dimpled look that many people develop on their thighs and buttocks. It is sometimes referred to as cottage cheese thighs, orange peel skin, or hail damage.

Cellulite can occur in both men and women. However, women are more likely to be affected by cellulite because of the way their fat, muscle, and connective tissues are distributed. As many as 90% of women have cellulite.

Doctors don’t know exactly why people get cellulite, but they do know it has something to do with fat and connective tissues. There is a layer of connective tissue that lies just under the skin. Under the connective tissue is a layer of fat.

In women, the connective tissue and fat cells lie in vertical lines. In men, they have a criss-crossed pattern. When the fat cells poke up between the connective tissues, it makes the skin look bumpy. Because of the way women’s tissues are arranged, it is more likely for fat cells to be able to poke up between them.

Other factors that may contribute to the appearance of cellulite are:

Hormones

Scientists have theorized that cellulite appears as women get older because their estrogen levels decrease. The decrease in estrogen leads to reduced blood flow to connective tissues.

This causes less collagen to be produced, so the connective tissues are less elastic and weaker. At the same time, fat cells also increase in size because of reduced estrogen.

Genetics

There appears to be certain genes that make cellulite develop. In addition, genes also play a role in metabolism, fat distribution, and circulation.

An unhealthy diet, smoking, and lack of exercise may also play a role in the appearance of cellulite.

Whether cellulite is a medical condition is up for some debate. Many experts believe that cellulite is simply a normal part of being a woman.

There are several treatments that claim to cure cellulite, or at least make it a little less unsightly, but reviews of studies indicate that the majority of treatments do not work or that the methodology used in conducting the research was flawed. [1], [2]

Cellu Slim Ingredients

Although the specific ingredients will vary by Cellu Slim product, many of them have at least some of the following ingredients in common:

  • Caffeine
  • Cecropia
  • Ivy
  • Apple
  • Xanthoxyline

The company makes all sorts of claims about the individual ingredients.

First, they claim caffeine is the “star of destocking” because it helps convert triglycerides into acids, making fat easier to eliminate.
They also say cecropia works to degrade triglycerides, making it possible to eliminate even the most stubborn fat.

Second, they say ivy improves the quality of collagen, making skin smoother and more elastic, and apple protects collagen and improves skin texture and tone. They also claim xanthoxyline stops the body from forming mature adipocytes, which store fats.

Does Cellu Slim Work?

Despite all the claims made about the Cellu Slim products, we couldn’t find a single link to research conducted on any of the products. The official website mentions clinical research, but does not provide specific information regarding any of the studies.

Therefore, to determine if Cellu Slim actually works, we took the time to research the individual ingredients to see if the claims the company makes are based on real science.

Caffeine

There is some evidence that caffeine applied as part of a topical cream may help with cellulite. Researchers from the Academy of Cosmetics and Health Care in Warsaw, Poland published a review in which they stated that caffeine used as the active ingredient in cellulite creams “prevents excessive accumulation of fat in cells.”

They also said that it “increases the microcirculation of blood in the skin.” [3]
However, some experts say that the effect is only temporary.

Caffeine may help at least initially because it acts as a diuretic, flushing moisture from the body. Removing the moisture can make the skin look firmer, but only until moisture is replenished. [4]

Cecropia

Cecropia is a genus of tree that has 61 tree species within it. These trees grow in neotropical regions. Some kinds have been used as food and in herbalism as first aid for dogs bitten by snakes.

However, our research turned up no scientific evidence related to cecropia for the reduction of cellulite or for fat loss. [5]

We did find a study linking cecropia to the metabolizing of lipids in patients with type 2 diabetes. But, the participants in the study were given cecropia in an infusion. Therefore, the study does not indicate its use as a topical treatment. [6]

Ivy

Ivy is also a genus of plant, which includes 12 to 15 species. Ivy is a climbing or creeping plant that grows all over the world, including Europe, Africa, Asia, and Macronesia.

Ivy plants are commonly used as part of landscape for their aesthetic quality and as habitat for wildlife. [7]

Elancyl does not specify which species of ivy is used in its products, making it hard to determine if it is effective

Apple

An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but we couldn’t find any scientific evidence that rubbing it on your skin will do anything for collagen.

Eating apples have been linked to all sorts of health benefits, and they may make a skin care product smell nice, but they don’t appear to do anything when applied topically. [8]

Xanthoxyline

Xanthoxyline is a substance extracted from Sichuan pepper, a spice that is often used in Asian cuisine. In the United States, you might see the Sichuan pepper called the “Szechwan pepper” or “Chinese pepper.” [9]

Once again, we just were not able to turn up any scientific evidence linking xanthoxyline to fat loss or cellulite.

Cellu Slim Benefits and Results

The Cellu Slim products claim all kinds of benefits, like:

  • A Slim Appearance
  • Smoother Skin
  • Increased Skin Elasticity
  • Cellulite Reduction
  • Destruction of Fat Cells

Unfortunately, the science just doesn’t back those claims. In fact, experts argue that there really isn’t any reliable treatment for cellulite at all.

Many doctors believe that cellulite is simply normal and that the creams and other treatments touted as cellulite treatments don’t work. Diet and exercise may be the best ways to deal with cellulite, though even those may not help since cellulite can affect thin people, too. [4]

Details on Cellu Slim and Weight Loss

Cellu Slim isn’t so much marketed as a weight loss product as it is as a cellulite reduction one. However, since the company does talk about the slimming effects of some of their products, one would assume that they somehow also help reduce fat.

Unfortunately, we didn’t find any proof that the ingredients contained in the products help with fat loss in any way.

How to Use Cellu Slim

The official website does not supply any instructions for the use of Cellu Slim products. On sites that sell Cellu Slim, we couldn’t find any detailed pictures of the product labels to determine how they are used either.

We assume they are simply rubbed into the skin. However, we don’t’ know how many times per day they should be used or how much of the product to use.

Where to Get Cellu Slim

Cellu Slim is available through several online retailers, including Amazon and smaller beauty supply stores. It may also be available in the physical location of some stores.

The products are a bit pricey, though, as we discovered when reviewing user comments. A 7-ounce bottle of Cellu Slim Anti-Rebel Cellulite costs about $40. The Offensive Cellulite 14-Day treatment costs around $21, and the Intensive Night Cream costs $50.

Is There a Cellu Slim Tablet?

Many people searching for relief from cellulite prefer a simpler approach, like a tablet. However, Cellu Slim does not come in a tablet form. It is available only as topical creams, gels, and shower gels.

Therefore, users are not ingesting any of the ingredients of the product, leaving us even more perplexed as to how they could assist with fat loss.

Potential Cellu Slim Side Effects

All products have potential side effects, and those side effects can differ from one person to the next. Because there was so little evidence concerning the use of any of the ingredients in the Cellu Slim products as topical applications, we were also unable to determine if they might have side effects when used this way.

However, we would guess that the occasional user might experience a rash, redness, or itchiness just as they might when applying any other substance to the skin.

Cellu Slim Product Warnings

The Elancyl website does not provide any warnings about their products. We presume that means they are considered safe for use by pretty much anyone.

However, when trying new treatments for anything, it’s always a good idea to talk to your doctor first.

Any Cellu Slim Lawsuits?

We’re happy to say that we did not find any lawsuits related to the Cellu Slim products, Elancyl, or even Pierre Fabre. It appears Pierre Fabre was involved in a squabble concerning online sales of their products at one time.

They took another company to court for copyright infringement, but those cases don’t apply to the safety or efficacy of their products.

Cellu Slim Alternatives

Helping women rid themselves of cellulite is big business, so there are more alternatives to Cellu Slim than we can count. However, many experts agree that most products out there only offer temporary relief from the appearance of cellulite, if they work at all.

Some alternative cellulite reducing products are:

  • Botanic Health Muscle Jelly Hot Cream
  • Nivea Skin Firming & Toning Gel-Cream
  • First Botany Arabica Coffee Scrub
  • Body Merry Cellulite Defense
  • Anacis Vela Shape Reaffirming Gel

In the end, though, most experts agree that creams and gels don’t really work. One doctor likened rubbing a cream on cellulite and expecting it to penetrate the skin, which is designed to keep stuff out, to placing a sandwich on your belly and expecting it to soak into your stomach.

In the end, it may just be best to change your attitude about your dimply thighs. Remember, 90 percent of women have cellulite, so there’s no reason to be ashamed of yours! [10]

The Bottom Line – Does Celluslim Work?

What’s the real deal with Celluslim? It’s nothing impressive, and doesn’t seem to do much of anything to reduce or remove the appearance of cellulite. For this reason, we have reservations. Plus, there are customer complaints to consider.

If you’re ready to lose weight, we suggest a weight-loss product with clinically tested ingredients. And, to get the most from it, use it with a balanced diet and regular exercise program.

Among the best products we’ve seen this year is Dietspotlight Burn. It’s made using only clinically tested ingredients known to support metabolism and weight-loss. And, as we researched, there was no mention of harmful side effects, or negative comments. That means users are happy with their results.

At this time, the makers of Dietspotlight Burn are running a Special Trial Offer. This shows confidence in the product.

Previous Cellu Slim Review (Updated January 12, 2016):

What You Should Know

Celluslim is an herbally-based diet supplement that claims to eliminate cellulite and fat through its unique blend of vitamins and natural herbal extracts, including Vitamin E and Cod Liver Oil. This is a unique type of diet pill -- no promises of weight loss here. Instead, they claim these ingredients will remove cellulite easily and effectively, without any diet or exercise needed. Simply swallow a Celluslim capsule with your daily meal to allow the blend to absorb. Unlike other cellulite reducers, this is ingested instead of applied topically; many skeptics are wary about Celluslim's actual cellulite-busting power. Despite the controversy surrounding it, Celluslim is still a widely popular cellulite treatment in the United Kingdom, where it first originated. Although Celluslim does not offer a money-back guarantee, which may discourage some dieters, it is relatively inexpensive. Celluslim is currently not readily available through retail stores, but it is available through many online stores for $19.84 per bottle. As for Celluslim's true cellulite-blocking power, this is up for debate -- most of its ingredients have conflicting results when swallowed.

Ingredients

Not Listed on Official Site: Vitamin E, Kelp, Evening Primrose Oil Powder, Red Clover, Cod Liver Oil Powder, Juniper Berries, Ginkgo Biloba Extract, Horse Chestnut, Gotu Kola, Herb Powder, Grapeseed Extract, Lecithin.

Product Features

Celluslim may promise amazing results such as the elimination of cellulite and extra body fat, but its ingredients reveal a different side to this tale. Upon closer inspection, all of Celluslim's ingredients provide no benefits in reducing cellulite. Many of these ingredients help support healthy skin and vitality, but there are no studies linking them to cellulite reduction. Strangely enough, Celluslim also does not provide any evidence on how it eliminates cellulite. Furthermore, one potent cellulite-reducing chemical, Vitamin E, is best absorbed through the skin instead of internally, where it can penetrate the skin for better results. Celluslim might provide some benefits, but there is currently no evidence showing it will eliminate cellulite -- and its testimonials tell the same story.

Advantages

  • Celluslim uses Vitamin E, which helps diminish the appearance of cellulite.
  • Celluslim contains all-natural ingredients.
  • Its price makes this supplement pretty accessible for any dieter in need of a cheaper diet aid.

Disadvantages

  • They offer no money-back guarantees.
  • There is no clinical evidence supporting Celluslim's claims of eliminated cellulite.
  • Outside testimonials claim Celluslim resulted in little to no reduction of cellulite.
  • Most of its ingredients are not linked to fat reduction.

Conclusion

Although Celluslim takes a different approach to cellulite reduction, it does not seem potent enough to provide noticeable benefits. Supplementing a body with helpful herbs and vitamins will improve the appearance of skin, which in turn diminishes the look of cellulite, but that alone will not eliminate cellulite. Overall, this looks more like a general skin health product to use. Dieters are encouraged to eat a healthy diet and initiate an exercise regimen to see permanent benefits. Celluslim is not a miracle worker, but will probably provide some benefits for the skin.
