The Amazonian Acai berry has been receiving a lot of publicity. The fruit is purported to be an antioxidant with several health benefits and is added to many products. The advantages are numerous; however, there are also some disadvantages as well. The bulk of these disadvantages are directly related to the overuse of the Acai berries.
Advantages of Acai Berries
Acai berries contain anthocyanins and flavonoids, which are both substances that are strong antioxidants. They have been known to protect the body from a variety of diseases by promoting the immune system. And antioxidant rich diet is purported to prevent heart disease and some cancers. Antioxidants are also thought to slow the effects of the aging process.
Acai and Weight Loss
Weight loss supplements containing Acai berries have increased in popularity recently. Eating a diet rich in antioxidant containing foods such as Acai has long been proven to be beneficial to overall health. The effects of Acai on weight loss has not been proven in definitive, peer reviewed studies.
Skin Care and Acai Oil
The oils are extracted directly from the Acai berry and used as an additive to several different types of beauty products. The antioxidant properties in the oil have been touted to treat many skin ailments such as acne, wrinkles and skin texture.
Acai berry products can have side effects. Since Acai is known to have a laxative effect, loose stools can result, as well as frequent bowel movements. Sienna leaf also has very strong laxative qualities and is a common additive to many Acai products. The two compounds together can cause diarrhea, and possibly dehydration as well.
Addiction and Appetite Control
Acai users typically report a loss of appetite since Acai contains a natural appetite suppressant. Many Acai supplements also contain caffeine which is known to be addictive. Some users have found it quite difficult to discontinue using some Acai and caffeine supplements.
