Keyto Review - 11 Things You Need to Know

One of the hardest parts of maintaining a ketogenic diet is knowing when you are in a state of ketosis. A new product, called Keyto, promises to take the guesswork out of low-carb diets. It analyzes chemical markers in your breath to determine how much fat you are burning.

Our research team was intrigued. Are there clinical trials to back up the makers’ claims, or is it a scam? We took a look at the evidence to determine the pros and cons and uncovered everything you need to know about Keyto and weight loss.

Keyto can be purchased through their Official Site.

What is Keyto?

Keyto is a smart breathalyzer that measures the acetone in your breath. Your body produces ketone bodies when it enters a state of ketosis. Acetone is one of those ketone bodies. Bad breath is common on low-carb diets. It’s because of the acetone.

The breathalyzer, which resembles an electronic cigarette, connects to a smartphone app that tells you how far into ketosis you are. Your breath will give off a higher score when you have more acetone present in your breath.

Keyto Levels

  • Level 1 – Not in ketosis
  • Level 2 – Starting Ketosis
  • Level 3-5 – Increased fat-burning potential
  • Level 6 – High-fat burning potential
  • Levels 7-9 – Extreme fat-burning potential
  • Level 10 – Deepest level of ketosis

The Keyto app does more than track ketosis. If you want to eat an avocado, the app will tell you how many carbs it contains. The app has tools to track your progress and help with meal planning. There is also a supportive online community to keep you motivated.

The breathalyzer also has a KetoBox that contains several selected keto-friendly snacks. It is included with the Key Eats Premium plan.

Does Keyto Work?

  • The Journal of Nutrition — “Based on available evidence, a well-formulated ketogenic diet does not appear to have major safety concerns for the general public…”
  • StatPearls Publishing — “Ketogenic diets have also been used for seizure disorders and, more recently, have found use in the athletic population as an alternative fuel for performance and health.”
  • National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute — “A healthy eating plan gives your body the nutrients it needs every day while staying within your daily calorie goal for weight loss.”

How Did Keyto Start?

Keyto was incorporated in 2014 by Dr. Ethan Weiss, Dr. Ray Wu, Liane Nakamura, and Gareth Everard. An Indiegogo campaign has raised $1,128,467 to date. A minimal number of pre-orders were shipped in January 2019. More orders are expected to ship in May 2019.

An additional 14,000 orders were shipped in July 2019.

Keyto Claims

The makers of Keyto make multiple claims regarding this ketogenic lifestyle product.

  • Lose weight the natural way
  • Backed by science
  • Easy to use
  • Accurate
  • Intuitive
  • Reliable

Keyto Ingredients

The system consists of a lightweight breathalyzer and an app that tracks your progress.

The ingredients in the KetoBox snacks will depend on the selection chosen. However, all snacks claim to be keto-friendly.

Does Keyto Work?

The makers claim this product is backed by more than a decade of science. Our research team was hoping they would make their studies public. Unfortunately, they didn’t.

We did find one study that shows it could work. The study, published in the American Journal of Nutrition,  concluded that measuring breath acetone is an effective way to determine if a person is in a state of ketosis.

Keyto Benefits and Results

A limited number of breathalyzers were released to the public in early 2019. Our research team couldn’t find any reviews online, but there was plenty of buzz about Keyto in keto-focused diet groups. Some dieters were excited. They liked the idea of knowing exactly when they entered a state of ketosis. Others were turned off by the price, especially considering ketone urine strips are just as effective and cost a fraction of the breathalyzer amount.

Details on Keyto and Weight Loss

Will Keyto help you lose weight? It can. Research available on the keto diet is limited; there is a potential for weight loss.

One long-term study, published in the Journal of Clinical Cardiology, found a ketogenic diet can reduce body weight, decrease triglyceride levels, lower LDL cholesterol, and reduce blood glucose levels.

The keto diet is difficult to maintain. If Keyto simplifies the process, more people might turn to the low-carb trend.

How to Use Keyto

The system is easy to use. Just breathe into your breathalyzer, and check your score on your smartphone.

Side Effects

Potential Keyto Side Effects

There are no side effects associated with Keyto. There are, however, side effects associated with a keto diet.

The most commonly reported keto side effect is carb flu. The symptoms of carb flu include:

  • Sugar cravings
  • Muscle soreness
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Constipation
  • Vomiting
  • Cramps
  • Weakness
  • Mood swings
  • Trouble concentrating
  • Headaches

A low-carb diet can also result in increased cholesterol in some followers. Kidneys must process the extra protein, so men and women with kidney problems must talk with their physician before cutting out carbs.

Dr. Anthony Dugarte reminds dieters to seek advice before starting any low-carb diet. “Discuss desires to make any large changes to a meal plan with a physician.”

What Users Are Saying

What Users Are Saying

“Keyto for keto diet – Loving this device. Bought in February and rigorously using daily.”

“Headline says it all; if you are not connected to the Internet, then the device will not sync and take a measurement. If your connection is spotty/goes down, the device stops working.”

“Device only worked about 60% of the time. Not sure of the accuracy but seemed like ketone readings were higher compared to blood tests. Eventually completely failed right at the one year warranty mark. Customer service didn’t help much and certainly didn’t stand by their product. Neat idea but not ready yet.”

  • Not connecting

3 Lights blink and go on after pressing the button to turn on the Keyto. Then there’s a beep. Still not able to connect to the “log Keyto Level”.

    • Jason

Did you find the issue with this? I am having the same problem.

  • Not connecting.

Bought the Keyto breathalyzer. Followed the instructions. I was able to sync the breathalyzer with the app. It worked for only two days. Haven’t been able to connect or scan to the “log Keyto level”. It keeps on saying to connect to Bluetooth which I already was connected. Changed the battery. Still no luck. Keeps on saying “log on to Bluetooth and reopen screen”.

    chad buccini (Verified Purchase)

I got my Keyto device yesterday and it kept saying the battery voltage was to high. I guess that was my fault for using the battery that they provided. After emailing them, they told me the products they shipped were defective and then they told me to buy different batteries. It is a triple A battery…. so I tried 5 different ones…..none worked….. I am in the process of returning it now.

    • San

Dont give up. I have been using it for 2 weeks and it works flawlessly. Probably your device is lemon and need replacement.

  • James (Verified Purchase)

I’ve had mine for 2 months now and use it a LOT. I need a positive feedback loop to keep me going and this really provides it.

    • Jane Volpe

Hi James, I just got mine and have downloaded the app. I can’t understand how to journey through it though. I signed in, registered my weight but can’t figure out what to do next. Every button I push comes to a dead end. Do you know if there is a video to walk you through the process?

      • Lora

Go to the app home page and touch the “+” sign in the center bottom marked log. Select “Log Keyto Level” and then, on the breathalyzer device, press the orange button. The device should beep and three lights on the device should start blinking as it heats up. You will see the progress in percentage on the app as it gets ready. When you blow, you have 10 seconds to blow until the very end of your breath. Do not blow hard, but make sure to run completely out of air as the acetone need for the reading is at the very end of your breath.
