How Did Soylent Start?
Rob Rhinehart, a software engineer from California, felt that preparing and eating a meal was a waste of time. He wanted to create a meal replacement drink that contained all the elements of a complete meal without the saturated fat or added sugars.
Rhinehart used an engineer’s approach to problem-solving when he created Soylent. He chose the 35 chemical ingredients he felt were necessary for human life. Not only did Rhinehart lose weight, but he also reduced his monthly grocery bill by $420.
Soylent was launched in 2013, and the company raised $74.5 million in funding by 2017. The name came from a 1966 science fiction novel by Harry Harrison.
The shake is manufactured and distributed by Rosa Foods. There have been several recalls associated with the brand. On October 12, 2016, the Soylent Bar was pulled from store shelves because it caused gastrointestinal illness. Multiple customers experienced nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting after eating the meal replacement bar.
Later that month, Rosa Foods halted production of Soylent Powder after several customers complained of gastrointestinal symptoms. They later released an updated version that was deemed safe for consumption.
