What is Lectin Shield?

Lectin Shield is an herbal supplement created by Dr. Steven Gundry. The formula contains nine ingredients claiming to support digestive health and intestinal strength. It’s supposed to be taken daily with meals so it can build up in your system and fight against lectins in the body to prevent lectin overload and neutralize cellular damage, but here is what a brief look at the research reveals:

  • NatureResearch done on d-mannose shows that the ingredient could benefit colon health.
  • Gut PathogensN Acetyl D-Glucosamine could increase biofilm in the body, which is essential to a healthy gut.

Ingredients

Lectin Shield Ingredients

Ingredients are claimed to promote digestive health. They include:

  • N Acetyl D-Glucosamine
  • Bladderwrack
  • D-Mannose
  • Okra Extract
  • Mucin
  • Sodium Alginate
  • Vegetable Peptase
  • Methylsulfonylmethane

Other ingredients include vegetable cellulose, stearic acid, and silica.

N-Acetyl-D-Glucosamine

N-Acetyl-D-Glucosamine is a monosaccharide derivative of glucose.

Bladderwrack

Bladderwrack is a type of seaweed “incorporated in weight-loss dietary supplements,” as published in the journal Drug and Chemical Toxicology. However, there’s no current research connecting bladderwrack to blocking dietary lectins, supporting intestinal health, curbing cravings for lectin foods, or encouraging digestive strength.

D-Mannose

D-mannose is sugar. According to the journal Molecular Immunology, “when [d-mannose] binds to sugars such as N-Acetyl-D-Glucosamine, “permits the protein to interact with bacteria.”

Okra extract

Okra is a flowering plant that is high in fiber. The journal PLoS One concludes okra extract has been used in “traditional medicine as a dietary meal to treat gastric irritation.”

Mucin

Mucin is a protein produced by the epithelial tissue of most animals, according to Nature Reviews Microbiology.

Sodium alginate

Sodium alginate is a binding agent often used as a food additive, says the Food and Drug Administration.

Vegetable peptase

Vegetable peptase is a protease enzyme that aids in the digestion of proteins.

What are Lectins?

Lectins are proteins that bind to carbohydrates. A study in Biochemistry revealed that lectins are found in all plants and animals. A study published in Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine suggests that eating large amounts of lectins can cause digestive problems, but the results were inconclusive.

Lectin Foods

What Foods Have Lectins?

If you want to follow a lectin-free diet, you’ll need to know what foods are the highest in lectins.

The following foods have some of the highest known lectin contents:

  • Fruit
  • Tomatoes
  • Eggplant
  • Potatoes
  • Beans
  • Legumes
  • Corn
  • Meat from corn-fed livestock
  • Milk
  • Squash
  • Grains
Benefits

Lectin Shield Benefits and Does Lectin Shield Work?

There is no evidence that Lectin Shield works. Dr. Steven Gundry provided zero verifiable evidence that the supplement can block lectins from binding in your body.

The best ways to reduce lectins in your diet are by:

  • Pressure cooking
  • Removing the seeds
  • Removing the skin
  • Sprouting
  • Fermenting
  • Boiling

Researchers believe lectins can:

  • Store proteins
  • Transport carbohydrates
  • Defend cells against damage

Details on Lectin Shield and Weight Loss

Dr. Gundry has not published any research that suggests Lectin Shield is an effective weight loss supplement. He claims that the supplement reduces bloating and supports intestinal health, but he makes those claims about all of his products.

Lectin Shield vs. Total Restore

Our research team compared Lectin Shield vs. Total Restore. Total Restore is designed to promote a healthy gut lining, while Lectin Shield focuses more on lectins’ effects.

Lectin Shield vs. Prebiothrive

Our research team also compared the supplement vs. Prebiothrive. Prebiothrive is a combination of five prebiotic strains that promote healthy gut flora.

Bottom Line

The Bottom Line on Lectin Shield

Taking a daily supplement like Lectin Shield may help your body digest lectins, but so far, there isn’t enough research to indicate that lectins are all that harmful to the body. Plant-based foods, especially proteins, are nutritious and essential for a vegetarian or vegan diet.

I have food/sugar sensitivities…..Have been using for one month…2 pills at breakfast and 2 pills at dinner. Noticeable improvement in digestion, food absorption. Most important is to continue to take probiotics in addition to this product. Noticeable improvement in reduction of water retention and stomach cramps if ingest beans, eggplant etc.

  • You seem to be missing the point of why people are wanting something that can block lectins........

I am also hoping that this product will help with my stomach issues. I’m not buying it for weight loss so not sure of why you’re looking at it for helping with weight problems. If you had stomach problems and spent nearly a week being sick because you unknowingly ate something containing lectins you would then understand why people like myself are hoping this will be a bit help. If the product builds up and can help to stop you feeling the pain and being sick then you’re willing to give it a go. You just need to think about how people with digestive issues feel, they are looking for a light at the end of the tunnel and hopefully this could be the light for some people.

There was never any claim by Dr. Gundry that Lectin Shield is for weight loss. It simply helps you when you eat a meal you know contains lectins such as grains or nightshade vegetables. 3 meals and I am thinking this is gonna help me tremendously with stomachache and diarrhea.
