In the United States, at the rate of about once per second, a patient checks into a hospital. With more than 30 million hospitalizations a year, some facilities are bursting at the seams. Over 10% of these stays are directly connected to obesity-related illnesses.

Obesity is expensive, with obesity-related medical care costs estimated at nearly $175 billion in 2016. Also, decreases in life expectancy and quality of life are associated with severe obesity.

All this is to say that preventative health has become more important than ever.

There’s no better and more direct way to prevent obesity than to seek guidance, motivation and accountability from one of the country’s 68,000 registered nutritionists or dietitians.

For 2017-18, we decided to focus on celebrating the top nutritionists. (Separately we will be releasing our dietitian rankings.) It should be noted there are many extraordinary nutritionists not on our list simply because we didn’t find sufficient information to properly evaluate them. If you know of a “superstar” nutritionist you feel should be included, please contact us.

Many of the nation’s registered nutritionists are experts in diet, obesity, food psychology, heart disease, diabetes and, of course, nutrition. More than anything, these professionals instruct clients on what to eat in order to achieve a desired outcome.

To create a process for evaluating nutritionists, we looked across several dimensions, including:

  • Ability to help clients safely lose weight, both in the short term and long term.
  • Easy-to-follow guidance.
  • Bedside manner and professionalism.
  • Safe and nutritionally complete advice.
  • Methodology that’s effective against cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
  • Comprehensive approach, incorporating calorie awareness, accountability, food variety and exercise.

Without further ado, these are our picks, in no specific order, for 2017-18:
